Wests Tigers prop Aaron Woods believes the coaching philosophies of Mick Potter are beginning to bear fruit after a slow start to his reign at the NRL club.
Potter's side produced their best performance since he took over from Tim Sheens by beating Parramatta 31-18 at Leichhardt Oval last Friday.
The result was a welcome one following the 42-10 humbling at Newcastle in round one and a scratchy display in the 28-18 success over Penrith a week later.
Woods had only ever been coached by Sheens at NRL level and admitted it had been difficult to get used to the more introverted Potter.
But the 22-year-old, who's certain to be a contender for a front-row spot in the NSW team this year, said the players have all bought into the methods of the former Bradford and St Helens coach.
"It was a bit hard at first to crack a joke with him, he was a bit stiff," Woods told AAP on Monday.
"He's brought a few funny things in, which we are keeping to ourselves, but I am enjoying working under him very much.
"It's been a breath of fresh air."
Sheens left the club in acrimonious circumstances after a woeful 2012 season in which the joint-venture started the year as premiership favourites but missed out on the finals.
Woods said Potter identified early that his new team was weak in defence - and the City Origin representative said it was a facet of the game that had been neglected in the past.
"We still have the same assistants in Royce (Simmons) and Georgie (Steve Georgallis) but things have changed.
"Pottsy is a lot more in-depth than what Sheens was - he was a lot about tackling.
"We have worked a lot more on defence in the pre-season.
"Before it was all about attack and not so much focus on defence.
"People were calling us soft up the middle, which wasn't good enough and we have really tried to rectify that this year."
