World Cup 2021

Looks like it will still be going ahead in England at the end of the year.

I wouldn't be surprised if lots of high profile NRL players back out to avoid mandatory quarantine etc. With that in mind I think it might be worth putting a few quid on some of the smaller teams to fluke a win, or England to win at home (they are currently at 9 to 1). Samoa and Fiji are currently at 51 to 1 odds.

Apologies if my post above reads like a gambling ad.

I love my international footy and am looking forward to this, I would be gutted if it did get cancelled at the last minute.

Yeah it will be in England, and I think the following one in 2025 is in France. There are a few Lebanese players floating around in France I believe!

That was the intention originally but there were concerns about finances, and I think the unfortunate fate of Toronto Wolfpack sealed the deal. If I understand correctly the same businessman backing the Wolfpack was backing the world cup bid in North America.

Nah the guy behind the USA world cup was also behind the NZ v UK Denver game, which attracted 20k people, but he didn't pay up. So after that the world cup bid fell through.

He was also the guy behind bringing the baseball to the SCG. Moore Sports

The guy behind Toronto was completely different

Ah ok, apologies, thanks for clarifying.

It was such a shame about the Wolfpack, they were building nicely from the ground up, getting enthusiastic crowds of locals etc, they finally made it to Super League in the face of a bit of English opposition, then covid shuts down travel and they get the boot.

I was joking.
He sucks.

But the team needs him.
I doubt he'd put the jersey on again tho.

I'm so pumped for the world cup, I love international footy (particularly helps when WT aren't going the best)

Every world cup there are excellent games, particularly in the group stages by the so called minows.

Love PNG, Tonga, NZ, Lebanon, France.
Think Samoa should go much better than previously with their squad.
Hope Fiji step it up also.

Really keen to see Greece and Jamaica. Both have great stories behind them.

Hope the best players elect to play.

Will be great to see UK do well at home, the game over there needs a boost. And all games will be live on BBC network.

I agree with every word of this mate, I love seeing those smaller countries. Watching the Pacific Test with a bunch of Papuans is one of my best memories.

And I'm very glad to see Jamaica in.

They didn't get a fair go.
Super League clubs denied them any central funding and had all their travel expenses to be covered. The only way they made money was off the gate or sponsorship.

But they were getting around 10k per game and were generating good interest in Toronto.

The owner made plenty of mistakes but the Super League really had it in for them, rather than support it as an opportunity to grow the game and their revenue.

I've gone off the Super League because of the way they treated Toronto

The Wolfpack were getting better crowds in Toronto than the Roosters get in Sydney!
