Going one step further, everyone that thinks Luai came here for the additional $300k per year, need to understand that the guy gets paid massive amounts in endorsements...he is even Spruiking MSI gaming laptops...that's an international tech company. His real motivation was to be our high-profile marquee man and perhaps deliver a premiership to the 3 time wooden spooners out of the Cleary coach/son shadow to raise his current and future marketability. So, no he is not here for the salary uplift he gets now, he is here for the 3rd party endorsements and future sponsorships he could get by delivering the club success. I would also argue that his get out clause is based on how the move would have impacted his profile and sponsorships....I'm guessing it is still a pretty healthy pipeline.

Whilst I understand your scenario, the reality is that for Marquee players the salary the club pays is dwarfed by the 3rd party deals they can sign. That $500k could be more like -$500k as is probably the case with Reynolds, finishing up at the Broncs and perhaps delivering them a premiership will mean he keeps getting paid for years to come, esp after retirement. If he came to the tigers and played a couple of seasons he throws away all of that. Yes the salary cap system is broken, my view is it only really works for your non-marquee players.
I think you are grossly overestimating the amount of 3rd party money that is available.

Not when you take into consideration future earnings from sponsorships and endorsements. And I am only really referencing 1 or 2 marquee players at each club, some clubs wouldn't have any standouts, we only really have Luai. For the vast majority their contract is the main source of income.

Future earnings I'd somewhat agree with but even then I'd guess it is less than 1 or 2 per club getting anywhere near the 500k as a direct result of being that clubs marquee player.

Just asking, you know for a friend??

Say you have 1 contract that is for 1.5M (total) and it's in... I don't know NSW.
And another that's 500k (unsure if for entire year, or both years??), in your state where your family have recently moved too....

Would you, turn down 500k? (or more)?
How old is the person?

No, in this instance, it's not.

We've been over this, money is not the determinate factor for everyone in every decision.

Reynolds has also come off a career where he's made many hundred of thousands of dollars for over a decade. That money wouldn't mean as much to him as it would to most.

When you've got a young family of your own, you don't argue with people who choose their family first.
I do agree with the premise of your post but I find it hard to believe the broncos are not compensating Reynolds outside the cap to supplement his reduced pay.
