Wrestling in tackles

There has been a bit of talk this week from various media about the effect wrestling is having on slowing down the game (to its detriment).
Not sure if anybody caught the replay of the '95 Test between Australia and NZ on Tuesday night but the speed of the game then to now is mindblowing.
It was like watching on fast forward!
In my opinion it was a much better product to watch and with the advancement in players training and fitness levels I can't see why we shouldn't try to cut out all this wrestling and get back to real footy.
Anyone got any thoughts?
PS. The other standout from that game was seeing again what a FANTASTIC player Tim Brasher was!
If they keep Moltzen at fullback they should get Brasher in for a one on one masterclass.

Does every one of your posts have to mention Moltzen.
News Flash: Moltzen will not be kept at fullback he doesn't even have a contract for next year.

i for one hate the wrestle its the biggest blot on the game at present, they lay on the tackled player looking around to see if there players are ready then start to get up give us a break hit the ground get off. and no starts for the defenders when do you see a penalty against the markers now not often stand side by side . its abloody joke i have watched the game since the late 50s i think the coaches kill the game , maybe no more than 2 me in a tackle the refs are not penalising the flop now. watch young at st george best late flopper in the game

It was more a comment how good Brasher was - and sorry , didn't know you were on the retention committee. :unamused:

I think the speed of the bulk of the 2005 season was heaps faster than any since, it was great to watch. Us and the Cowboys made the most out of it. It's a shame they changed how the play the balls were to be played the following season to slow things down again and with the wrestling going on, it is slowing down the game more.

I'm glad there are people talking about it now, some of the games this year have certainly been snore fests.

tigerdave you are 100% spot on the game that i like was 2005 smaller more mobile pack of forwards there was still a place for the big forwards but not the hole pack 100 kgs +

2005 we were known for having a "mobile pack"

The wrestle bores the game to bits
They need to time the tackle(eg 3second refs discresseion )…as soon as held is called the player must make an effort to get off and if they aren't off in a certain time penalize them... The refs should start blowing their guts out and use discresseion .... After 20 penalties for holding wrestling they will stop I Guarentee it

Also another idea get a wrestling jui jitsu coach to review the game and any movement they view to be a signifigant wrestling manouver from a player they receive a demerit or points for severity… A certain amount of demerits or points and they will receive a suspension

Get a former player on the match review panel, and put long suspensions down for this crap. The guys doing the job now have not played the game over the past 5-10 years and will not know what they're looking for. Matty Johns' piece in today's telegraph was a real eye opener.

They were saying that a lot of clubs are already have jui jitsu coaches, which is the problem. I blame the Storm for starting this crap.

Bellamy started this…even though he will never admit it.....but I blame the NRL for not cracking down hard on the Storm and Bellamy when it first came into the game...had they done this...the wrestle virus in the NRL wouldn't have spread like it has....now every team does it and good luck trying to get rid of it!.

Bellamy didn't start this …... Due to my lack of size when I first got into Colts in Brisbane I was told to learn some judo moves to help use what weight I did have

That was in the mid eighties ..... I know a lot has changed since then but you can see where I'm heading with this

Forgot to add , remember the Cumberland Throw ?? Where did that come from ??

Wrestling originally came into the game a long time ago. The first wrestling tactic used was picking up the guy carrying the ball's leg to bring him to the ground. The wrestling tactics used to get the guy onto his back belong in the game in my opinion, but the choke/arm/leg locks and other grubby tactics like rolling pins and cannon balls have no place in the game.

Point is MM that don't you love it when the players from 70's and 80's come out and bag wrestling , yet they were the ones that started it

I realize they had no idea how important it would become , but they still were the ones who started this fiasco

Yes and no, they did start it, but they were using it for another purpose, to put the ball carrier on the ground. What it has transformed into is a big problem. They need to get a recently retired player onto the MRC who can tell them exactly what to look for. If players get rubbed out for long periods of time coaches will get the message. Either that or get a wrestling coach for the refs who can help them out with what to look for. If it takes weeks of 15-13 penalty counts to get the crap out of the game so be it.

I can't speak for the rest of the Forum of course , but I won't spend my hard earned to see 25-30 penalties in 80 minutes Sounds a bit like a rugby yawnion game personally
