Benji's future hinges on Wests Tigers home ground Josh Massoud The Daily Telegraph July 05, 2013 12:00AM Wests Tigers … star Benji Marshall after training. BENJI Marshall's future could hinge on where the Tigers decide to play their home matches, with club power brokers considering an approach to ANZ Stadium or Allianz Stadium to help bankroll the Kiwi star's contract upgrade.

Despite Marshall threatening to leave the joint venture after being denied a two year extension, Tigers officials remain confident of keeping him. Senior directors and members of the club's retention committee held a meeting this week, where it was decided that a renewed offer would be tabled to Marshall.

Wests insiders have told The Daily Telegraph that an extension is still unlikely. However, the new package represents a $100,000-a-season increase for 2014 and 2015 on the initial upgrade that was tabled to Marshall two weeks ago. And in a novel twist, the Tigers have also spoken about approaching both ANZ Stadium and Allianz Stadium to bankroll the extra money via a third party sponsorship.

With their SCG Trust deal expiring at the end of this year, the Tigers are now in talks with both venues to host their four non-suburban fixtures from 2014 onwards. ANZ Stadium currently sponsors Ben Barba and Greg Inglis, who are both ambassadors for the Olympic Park venue. It would be unlikely the stadium would stretch its NRL investment to three ambassadors, but Marshall could come into the equation should Barba move to Queensland at the end of this year. Marshall and his agent, Martin Tauber, have been clearly unimpressed by the Tigers' attitude toward honouring a verbal promise made by former CEO Steve Humphreys.

According to Marshall, Humphreys promised a two-year extension when the salary cap was re-negotiated. But that didn't eventuate and Marshall has since refused to guarantee he'll remain at the Tigers amid interest from Super Rugby franchise, the Auckland Blues. He has ruled out playing against the Tigers in the NRL. "When Stephen Humphreys was there I thought I agreed to a contract to end of 2017," Marshall told Channel Nine's Footy Show last night. "But since he resigned from the club, they’ve said they’re not going to be honouring that deal anymore. "To be honest, my manager is working it out with the club. "I have been at the Tigers and my loyalty can’t be questioned, I’ve given 11 years of my life there.

I don’t want to play for another NRL club. "Just out of respect. I’ve been brought up in a way where loyalty is a big thing and out of respect for my teammates and my fans. "I’ll hopefully start playing consistent footy and hopefully show the club what they are going to miss out on if they don’t go down my way."

Not sure about WT going back to Homebush. Its sad overall that clubs have to consider such things to pay for one player.

Maybe when ANZ is re-done then we could move back there.

Souths plays closer to our home base and WT plays closer to souths home base - silly really

Got to say I like Homebush better than SFS. I can't imagine that I am talking on everyones behalf. To me the atmosphere is very similar but parking and infrustructure is better

Nice twist of words Benji

When Steven Humphreys was there I thought I agreed to a contract until 2017

WEll Benji you either did or didn't and where is Humphreys comments either denying or accepting what Benji has said ??

Homebush means no membership for me.

Also WTF was Benji doing on that mongathon The Footy Show last night the day before a game?

Especially after saying he was stopping his media commitments about a month ago Smeg

can we believe anything he says ??

To me the SFS is way out of our clubs geographical location whereas ANZ fits a lot better. I have no problems with Benji but reading this stuff is starting to annoy me.

I just want it out of the way and forgotten about.

Personal PR. Probably wanted to come out and blow his own horn after the thrashing he's copping in the media.

Another reason not to extend his contract

Let me start I don't post much but constantly find myself here. I find it an absolute disgrace how some of you bang on about benji. With Robbie they are the wests tigers.
Before benji sponsors wouldn't have a bar of the the tigers now even when the tigers are in a 7 game losing streak they still manage to attract sponsors. Please the guy has bled for our team and with him saying he would never play against the tigers that is the biggest respect he could have us the supporters have given.
Is he worth the money yes he is. Ask my 6 year old and his friends who they want to be and they all say ' benji'. Now put that in dollar terms,
One last thing I think everyone is bait harsh ok I do believe he is out of form but there has only been one playmaker I have seen dominant behind a badly beaten pack and that's Andrew johns , now our pack seems to be holding their own and benji is playing a whole lot better.
Go the Tigers

Exactly, endless!

I'm not for paying 800k but i think 600k would be okay if his form picks up more, given the salary cap rises. 600k next year is like 450k in 2011 and 400k in 2010\. It's not as much as it was.

Your joking me aren't you? Better he on the footy show than at a pub/club or someone like that. He's not a two year old who can't make his own choices. What's going to happen whilst on the show? Strain an abdominal muscle from laughing to much? Give me a break! I'm sure many other players have done worse than appear on a show the night before :unamused:

No other club does it ,and Benji has never been able to do it previously

Go the Tigers

100% yes!

Benji is the Tigers and I for one am so proud that he is in my team.

The loyalty he has shown and continues to show is beyond question. He will never play for another NRL team unlike some of the others before him who have gone where the dollar is.

To those who makes comments about his ego; I have to ask if you know the man personally.

For me that it not what I see.

Yes everyone is entitled to their own opinion; but opinion is not fact.

See you all at the game tonight….Go Tigers!!!!

Hope they go homebush! Easy to get too + if the tigers are going well likely to see 30+ for NSW teams

Have Gold memberships to ANZ!

Two very good responsible non-biased replies.

A few members of this forum should realize in the word supporters is the word support.

Benji has been my favourite player for a long time. I can only imagine how many people I share that with. The fact he is a club legend and the best asset this club has had only enhances how important a player he is to this club. His form has been shakey this season and his defense poor against the Broncos. But he's human and going through a tough time in his career. He'll come out the other side a much better person for it.

Please..please go to a proper stadium then once again will become a season ticket holder x 6 premium tickets hopefully next season please.

Another Benji debate Yay! :brick:

My two cents worth:

When Benji's on, there aren't too many players that make footy more enjoyable to watch.
But when Benji is off, he really makes some bad decisions and plays: kicks in play, tackling & taking on the line.
To be a senior player in our squad and ask for top dollar, you need to be a consistent performer, Not miracle plays in every game, just consistent all round good football. E.G Robbie, Thurston etc.

Take the game against the storm last week (and yes he did do some really good things) but to throw that pass, I think to Blake when we just needed to shut them out was just crazy, and this from one of the senior leaders in the team, there is many more examples of this, this occurs a lot.

It's the players that don't have this crap in their game that get the big dollars and lifelong contracts (mostly), so for what he is asking, improvements need to be made.

I'm not a Benji basher, I couldn't think of anything better than watching an inform Benji linking up with an inform Simona to really bring some magic to our back line. But at present, I would not risk losing the up and coming Brooks & Moses on a gamble that Marshal may find that magic again.

Whatever way the club decides to go, I believe the clubs future is looking bright!

Go the mighty Tigers!

I don't see how turning up on the footy show is in anyway going to hamper his playing ability the next day. Was Beau Ryan not on last night?
