WT Head-hunt Grant Mayer From The AFL

Very unusual for a CEO to hire an ex-CEO. In any case I hope he brings/has brought some membership specialists with him from GWS, as it's clearly an area of some concern

Wests Tigers appoint Grant Mayer as General Manager of Commercial Operations
Monday 29 October 2012 9:29 AM

Wests Tigers is delighted to announce the appointment of Grant Mayer, who will take up the role of General Manager of Commercial Operations from Monday 29 October.
Mayer is no stranger to Rugby League circles having spent over six years with the Canterbury Bulldogs as an Events & Operations Manager, a further three years as Chief Executive Officer at the Manly Sea Eagles, as well as a 10 month stint at French Rugby League Club, the Catalan Dragons. During this time, Mayer crossed paths with NRL Coach Mick Potter who joined the Club late in the 2006 season.
Most recently, he worked for cross code rivals, GWS Giants, as their General Manager of Commercial Operations for close to a three year period.
Wests Tigers Chief Executive Stephen Humphreys said that the Club is incredibly fortunate to recruit someone with Mayer’s credentials.
“Grant has a wealth of management and commercial experience across differing sporting organisations,” Humphreys said.
“The sporting landscape, particularly in Sydney, is extremely competitive for Clubs like Wests Tigers and I have no doubt we will benefit greatly from having someone with Grant’s knowledge and expertise.
“Our Club already enjoys a high profile in the game of Rugby League but with Grant’s guidance, I’m sure we will become one of the leading sports organisations in Australia.
Grant Mayer said that he’s looking forward to working with a Club with such a proud history and tradition.
“Wests Tigers has such an impressive portfolio of sponsors on board and I can’t wait to meet all of them in due course,” he said.
“The Club already has an unrivalled reputation in terms of the value proposition for sponsors and we will continue to set the bar high in this regard.”

Yes.

His tenure at Manly was amazing considering the resources he had to work with.

Growth in every facet moving forward.

All you can ask for

In terms of his position incoming at WT?

That depends entirely on the strucuturing of his position. Don't mean to seem vague but generally it would be that he comes in and takes the day to day business work off the CEO's desk, Basically a second in command but with zero function in terms of the football club

Sounds about right. That and strategic planning for the future for the business side of the oranisation

Brett left in May, and they never filled his position. They also lost two other guys in sponsorship that they never replaced.

Good to see the club taking a step in the right direction. Investing in a few outsiders with some good knowledge and experience in their respective departments never hurt. Great to see the club moving forward after an ordinary year.

I actually bumped into Brett at the airport a couple of weeks back. I met with him in one of the member/forum feedback sessions he ran and he was always very open and friendly whenever I saw him.

He was headhunted for a global role with Nitro Circus back in May.He said he spends a lot of time overseas now but keeps in regular touch with the club management and players and has been trying to assist where possible whilst they were searching for his replacement. He said to me that a replacement was imminent and that he would be a good addition to the club - obviously this was Mayer.
