I’ve been thinking about how we can improve our poor edge defence. Marshall’s defence has deteriorated to the extent that his position in the side is untenable. Garner, too, has had his defensive issues and he, in combination with Marshall, are simply not working.

I would replace Marshall with Mbye. We are stuck with him for two more years and there is a chance he could add value at 5/8. Hopefully Benji retires and JRey moves to the ESL, which makes Mbye one of only a few options for next year. Certainly, he is a better defender than the other two, which is my main reason for choosing him.

I would replace Garner with Blore. He hits hard in defence and hopefully has a long term future with the club.

To replace Mybe at left centre I would choose Kepaoa, rather than move Tommy. I know Tommy is a centre but he has been doing a decent job on the wing and looks much more comfortable under the high ball. We’ve got Kepaoa long term so let’s give him a crack and see how he goes.

I see that a number have suggested that Douiehi moves to 5/8 or centre. He has been coming along nicely at full back and was the only shining light on a very grim night against Easts. He’s easily the best fb at the club, so until a better one comes along I think that’s where he should stay.

I have picked Packer, but without any enthusiasm. We really are scraping the bottom of the barrel here. I’m hoping Packer arcs up against a Cleary coached side (within reason).

I was assuming it would be Tommy and AD at the back to field the bombs. He can kick to Kepaoa in the defensive line I suppose, but that would be a pretty shallow kick. Am I missing something ?

Quite regularly in the modern game kickers will target specific players in the line .....Cleary is extremely good at landing the ball on a spot ...probably all that ballast in his chin
