Russian invasion of Ukraine

Yep, democracy has a real challenge on its hands with the rise of social media, creating a forum for whack jobs to have louder and louder voices.

OK, sounds like we're done here. While the discourse has remained civil, I disagree with you vehemently. Not sure who Malding is but I might counter with ... no more Chamberlainism.

When you talk about communism i assume you mean China because Russia has not been a communist country for many years.Russia has never known real democracy from the days of the Tsar through the Soviet Union to what is basically a dictator (Putin) today.
I actually have a great deal of empathy for the Russian people as they have never had much of a say in the direction in which their country goes.Putin just has the opposition suppressed as much as he can

This situation in Ukraine is everything to do with The Ukrainian Govt and it’s blantant corruption. Playing wacked geopolitics with wanting to join NATO etc they’ve been propped up by the US for years now. Few days ago I noticed the Ukraine acknowledged the Minsk agreement. Sorry mate but too late.

It’s over for the Ukraine. Was nice to see the fireworks and celebrations in Donetsk (no media mention of that here in the west of course) etc yesterday. Those poor people on the border have been shelled by Ukrainian forces for the past 8 years. Glad they have peace now they can reunite as majority are ethnically Russian.

The shelling over the last 8 years has hardly been one way. Ukraine has had every right to try to defend its borders. Russian speaking Ukrainians have been at the forefront of those trying to defend Ukraine's sovereignty from the Moscow backed rebels this whole time.
There was zero chance that Ukraine was going to be joining NATO any time soon, it is a joke to use this as justification for an invasion.

Maybe not Bratislava and Budapest, but if I was in Estonia or Moldova I would definitely be worried given you and others have already used the presence of 'ethnic Russians' as justification for invasion.

Communism is dead. China and Russia are completely capitalist.
 
It's all wrong, including our country profiting on the back of the bombarded sick and starving in Yemen by selling military equipment to the Saudis.

Britain is probably the worst as they have long been a haven for dark Russian money and the response from their PM in parliament this week has been laughable, apart from the lies.

China is not 'completely capitalist', it is a command economy. There had of course been economic liberalisation from Deng Xiaoping onwards, to the extent that there was a proliferation of billionaires, but under Xi Jinping this is increasingly being wound back. Wherever the market is considered a threat to the Party, it is kept in check.

As I recall Putin invaded when Obama was in the Oval Office and got slapped with a feather. So why wouldn’t he wait for his next opportunity.
The Ruble has spiked , but the Moscow index is off nearly 50%, wiping $150b of their exchange.
