I honestly have no idea it was so very long ago i am now almost 70 and i would have met him in my first job when i was working in a bank.His story has stuck in my mind ever since

I’ve already replied why from a Russian perspective they have a reason to invade/liberate

Putin isn’t a crazy autocratic dictator. I think he is one of the smartest and most pragmatic leaders around atm. I’m just stating facts man.
 
The RAN could put at the very least one Hobart class AWD off Odessa to intercept missiles, why are we not doing this?!

20/40, many years ago when I was in the military we used to get security briefs on world political and military situations and this was forecasted well before Ukrainian independence.
You would be surprised by how many billions of dollars Putin has at his disposal to spend on weapons.
As I said before, there are parts of his country that lack the basic necessities of living.

It’s sadly like the the story of many people forced to flee the Russians.

Many, many people didn’t make it.
Including a good chunk of my family.

Russian tyrany and opression is something that’s engrained in us. Most peope laugh it off but I guess that’s changed in the last 24 hours. Fortunately (or unfortunately) my family have taught me their lived experience of their ruthlessness.

I don't see anything pragmatic about invading a neighbour because they are exercising their sovereignty as a nation. While they appear to proclaim that their economy is not vulnerable to Western sanctions, their stock market collapse would suggest otherwise so I am not sure he's as smart as he thinks he is either (although I concede there's plenty of time for it to recover, or seek support from the likes of China.)

I felt the same about the US/Western invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq as well. It's just Russian imperalism for a change.

We cannot do it alone, but I certainly agree with your sentiment.

There is a lot of history there, but most importantly is that Ukraine agreed to give up it's strongest military deterrent of a nuclear arsenal three decades ago, such on the basis of assurances given by those both east and west of them that is currently being violated.
 
Like in any "asymmetrical war", as the US, USSR, China learned in Afghanistan, Vietnam, Iraq "it is not over, until is over".
The occupation of the territory means nothing, and is only the first phase of war, as the guerrilla war starts. In this type of war the technical supremacy means noting, especially as the guerrilla forces will be locally and internationally supported with intel, shelter, food, and weapons. As coffins/ body bags start arriving, Russia's will to fight "someone else's war" will be questioned. Ukrainians have a very strong motive to fight as their homes and their lives are threatened, so IMHO, the aggressor will always loose - but be prepared for a long war.

But that’s what I’ve just mentioned in another post CB in 2014 there was a US backed coup resulting in a US selected administration in the ukraine. A culmination of western interference. There’s a few videos of Biden, Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon et Al saying the funding they give Ukraine. I’ll see if I can find it

Biden well as useless as Carter was, he won't do anything
Australia - we are pretty irrelevant to Russia we won't do much and elections happening
China will join in soon and have a crack at Taiwan
Then we will have issues
