I closely follow the RAAF and Exercise Red Flag was conducted in Alaska. The USAF flew aircraft from all over the US as well as Japan to participate. The UK sent Typhoons and the RAAF provide 4 new F35As direct from the US production line, FA/18 Growlers and an E7A Wedgetail. A great effort by the RAAF highlighting the well balanced force that it has now become.

For those interested, the E7A Wedgetail was developed by the RAAF with Boeing. The UK is purchasing three and the USAF has indicated it will be buying the aircraft to the replace its E3As. For a small player in Defence, we certainly are hitting some home runs.

Yeah those wedgetail drones look deadly as.

In the Philippine Sea a huge naval exercise with the nuclear carriers USS Carl Vinson and USS Abraham Lincoln as well as two big deck amphibious ships USS America and USS Essex. Do you believe a message is being sent to any nation in particular. Regardless, it is a highly impressive formation of warships.

I haven't updated this thread recently but there has been a Senate Estimates Committee - Economic Reference Committee into among other matters the Hunter Class Frigates. I am becoming increasingly concerned an immature design (British Type 26) was selected and then significant modifications made to it. The first Type 26 is building on the Clyde and it appears to be heavier than first believed. This will impact the Hunter Class whose weight reportedly has increased from 8,000 tonnes to 10,000 tonnes. Without an increase in power, this will impact speed, operation of the CEAFAR L2 radar etc.

I was always an advocate of an updated Hobart design as three have been built in Australia and are in service. Sure they may not be the latest design, but they are a good design. Note the Arleigh Burke Class destroyers in the US Navy date back to around the 80s and are still being built

We may need to watch this space especially if there is a change of Federal Govt.

With regard to the Hunter Class frigates, here is a statement from the Opposition. I think all Australian Taxpayers should be concerned that this project is running significantly over budget and behind time. I hope if there is a change of Federal Govt, the new Govt scraps this project

The electioneering begins. You would believe with such a significant announcement that the Opposition would have been informed prior to the announcement. After all, a bi-partisan approach to Defence has been taken by both parties.

I had my first phone call yesterday in regards to my voting intentions and why i would be voting that way.Since climate change and the way the PM and his cronies disregard over half of our population (female) forms a large part of my concerns it certainly won't bring joy to my local member (and he is one of the few decent Liberals)

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
thanks man, that was great.

A link to the APDR article on a future East Coast submarine base. Navy types are suggesting Port Kembla is the favourite, if it ever eventuates. I wonder if the Government realises we did have a former submarine base on the East Coast named HMAS Platypus inside Sydney Harbour.

A spectacular video of HMAS Perth re-entering the water after completing her AMCAP upgrade at Henderson yard in WA. AMCAP resulted in upgrades to radar, comms, aircon, sewage and diesels. Perth has been in Henderson Yard since 2017 due to a shortage of crew.

HMAS Perth has been garaged with the roller door down since 2017 due to a crew shortage....... WOW 😳.
With Russia and China flexing their muscles atm, I hope we are currently recruiting sailors by the dozens to man our ships and subs.

Um....Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, Lithuania, Belarus, Georgia, Chechnya, Dagastan, Khazakstan, Armenia, Azerbajian, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia/H, Chechia, Slovak Republic, Poland, and half of Germany all wave hello as does my partners family who fled under gunfire as refugees from Russians who had no interest in Global hegemony.

For those interested in the growth of the shipbuilding industry in Australia, the Government recently announced the construction of a large dry dock near Henderson in WA which will allow for the construction of large naval vessels in WA. The size of HMAS Choules, HMAS Adelaide and HMAS Canberra provide a guide of what is meant as a large naval vessell. Replacements for them will be built in Australia.

This means there will be many opportunities for young Australians to upskill and learn an in demand trade knowing these skills are in short supply worldwide.

In addition, the current shiplift at Henderson is to be replaced with one of greater lifting capacity

The biggest problem the RAN has is recruitment and retention. The cost of living near the major fleet bases and the conditions are driving many good sailors away.
