Shipbuilding Osborne Naval Shipyard South Aust

The biggest problem the RAN has is recruitment and retention. The cost of living near the major fleet bases and the conditions are driving many good sailors away.
It's not overly expensive near Henderson. 15-20km away you can find reasonable rent and house prices in places like Baldivas. Not sure about the conditions though.

Well they will have to start recruiting soon.

Fair call. I know a lot of guys who hate Sydney and obviously can't afford anything there. The base is a real pain to get to and the parking is horrible. If they were to move the base (massive, massive undertaking) it would help keep people in.

For those interested, HMAS Toowoomba has completed its AMCAP upgrade at Henderson Yard in WA. The ongoing success of the upgrades to the ANZAC Class frigates (this is their second) within time and budget is outstanding. The ship-lift is to be replaced by a larger capacity unit for Hunter Class when they eventually take to the water. Another upgrade of the armament on the ANZACs is planned with towed array sonar and NSM launchers and missiles to replace the Harpoon currently fitted immediately in front of the bridge.

Frigate 155 in the background is HMAS Ballarat and the other frigate is HMAS Stuart.

You wonder why instead of the hunter frigates we could of got 3 more destroyers and invested in cheaper submarine hunting corvettes.

Just spitballing but as shown by the Ukraine war, drones and.cheap missiles are in abundance and even though our ships are technically proficient, they're aren't enough of them.

How would you have the Australian Navy within the budget now from scratch?

The Hunter Class frigates to be built in Adelaide are based on the Type 26 Frigate being built on the Clyde River in Glasgow. Here is HMS Glasgow at the BAE shipyard. Note how cramped the yard is which is to be expanded. The yard was to be built to the design of the Osborne shipyard in Adelaide but there are tough economic times in the UK.

I agree with you on more Hobart Class destroyers. I preferred an RAN fleet of Hobart Class destroyers - 18 in total, with the the last 15 designed with latest iteration of LM2500 gas turbine engines, uprated diesels, SPY6 radar and Aegis 10 combat system. A modification of the Collins Class subs was the obvious choice but.........

Gas Turbines on ships are those used by aircraft eg LM is Lockeed Martin. RR is Rolls Royce.

So an RAN with

Hobart Class x 18
12 son of Collins Class
Adelaide, Canberra
Choules
Supply, Stalwart
Patrol Boats x 20

Interesting. Taking away recruitment, more Hobart Class destroyers would of been the way to go since the design would only needed to be tinkered a little for the upgrades. I understand their submarine defence isn't as good as the hunter frigates? Not sure.

A new Collins class would be interesting. I understand the original was Swedish in design? Where would you build them? How would you offset their range?

Australia should of invested in a naval base on the north of Papua New Guinea and the need for Nuclear propulsion wouldnt of been as demanding.

But that list you put up is what we really need. We haven't got enough of a surface fleet, numerically speaking

Hobbo will be all over this story but the UK is having difficulty with the deformation of welds on the HMS Edinburgh due to cold weather. Should inform the construction of the Hunter Class which will be built indoors in halls.
