Wests Tigers Coaches

Unfortunately the responsibility that comes with being the Wests Tigers coach isn't as straightforward as coaching the team but is more a balancing act in which handling our board, club systems & infrastructures, media pressure and a number of other interconnected tasks or matters need to be bridled. Or at least understood.
It seems more sensible not to recruit a rookie coach and until we can get our house in order, the job will overpower almost every successor IMO.

If we have competent assistant coaches that can capably direct the team (with gameplans, technical preparation, attacking and defensive structures etc ,), then all Sheens really has to do is offer his expertise and presence to manage (I'm not joking) team selections, media scrutiny, boardroom politics and retention & recruitment - aimed at fulfilling key positions for the club's succession planning. Future coach included.
We're not in an ideal situation so need someone who is able to handle the heat and accepts all the challenges that come with the job.

Whether Sheens is the answer or not, I still hold him in high regard to the one premiership glory he presented us, and I recall he came to us after being sacked by the Cows. With all the available Coaches available at present that would throw their name in the hat, I think this is the best option even if not palatable by some as it gives us that what if scenario ? Can he repeat 2005 🤔

Honestly I think this decision is enough for me to give up my membership. Some decisions made have been bad in hindsight, this one is terrible in advance.

Sheens could be god, Buddha and all sorts of divine entities rolled into one, but he is destined to fail. His rookie offsiders will suddenly become great coaches with 2 years under him. Somehow they will also be great man managers, be able to inspire and educate others despite most history showing them to be self absorbed and deaf to alternate views.

Considering we couldn’t convince a single coach to come when there are only 16 openings, how will we ever sign a player that has an alternate option.

I’m sure there were other options, just not options that kept the old boys as happy as this one.

Can’t help but feel this narrative has been coerced since last year 2021 vs Manly where in the space of a month it was suggested that Madge had coached his last game and Sheens was on his way back to the club with a burning desire still to coach.
We must have a really split board considering on one hand Maguire was locked in for the next two years and the other he was a dead man walking.
Hopefully this Sheens decision unites all parties.
May the media rejoice in having the Tiger King return to his rightful throne as coach of the Wests Tigers.

I don't like the idea of Benji and Robbie just walking into coaching without putting any runs on the board.

If they want to be considered I'd be saying righto well you're coaching the U/18s next year or you're coaching Reggies and see how they go with it.

If their personal lives, business and media commitments don't allow for this then then how committed are they to a future in coaching?

Sheens might be our only option. This is extremely disappointing from the club. The way this has been handled is nothing short of shambolic.

I don't think it matters who the coach is right now. We're not going anywhere special for a few years with this roster. At least Sheens is on board with the development movement and isn't trying to save his job (he'll just create a new role if coaching doesn't work 😂)

Given the impending Sheens announcement it would be good to know-not that we're likely to ever actually be told-who, if anyone, actually expressed an interest in the job. I can recall a few occasions when Sheens or Lee said they'd received calls or applications from people interested in the job. It's possible as some say that nobody at all was interested but with only 17 jobs up for grabs, I find that pretty hard to believe!

You’d want total autonomy, not have Sheesns and his rocking chair invade every meeting.
I would say no one wanted the poison chalice. Good decision to sack a bloke who did….
