LOL, Gildart.

He is definitely a dolphins calibre player,
But when they were a Q cup team & not a first grade team.

I have read countless posts from you suggesting that the Bulldogs are a basketcase and in no better position than us. Without getting into an argument I disagree. My reasoning, the bulldgos have started their rebuild already have debuted talented juniors over the past 2 years, have a head of football, qualified for that role, in that exact role, have a pathways plan in place with 2 feeder clubs providing to the first grade squad and have a roster full of talented, quick, strong, skillful players.

If I was to compare them to a club previously in a similar position to them but albeit not as dour I would say they are about 1 year behind where the sharks were when they sacked Morris and appointed Fitzgibbon
In a far better position to take on a Ciraldo to inject new life into the roster.
Where as we are currently the 2015 Knights getting set for a hat trick of wooden spoons.

Bulldogs sacked their coach a few weeks ago after only 34 matches in charge. Their previous coach didn't make it through his third season in charge. They have won 10 matches in the past 2.5 seasons, including finishing 15th and wooden spoon last year. Tigers won more matches in 2021 alone (8) than Bulldogs managed in 61 rounds of football (from 2020 until Rd 13 2022).

As bad as 2022 is for Tigers, arguably rock-bottom, Bulldogs are only ahead of us by virtue of one extra win, against us.

Now if these are indicators that the Bulldogs have turned the corner and have a strong foundation, I cannot see it. I'd still like to know who their long-term halves and fullback will be, plus who is going to provide the platform in the forwards. I'd like to know who their head coach is going to be. I suppose we'll find out over the next few seasons.

Personally I think anyone who believes Bulldogs are on the up, right at this moment, are being clouded by 2 recent wins against ordinary opposition (Parra and Tigers). I heard the same comments in 2021 when they signed Burton and JAC, and its got them nowhere in 2022.

By the way, when Sharks sacked Morris they had just completed a run of 6th, Premiers, 5th, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th (currently 4th). In the same period Bulldogs went 5th, 7th, 11th, 12th, 11th, 15th, 16th (currently 14th). If you can somehow equate those trajectories in your head, well, I cannot see that either.

I guess as you state, success is based on wins and losses. On that measure it’s hard to argue with everything you’ve highlighted above so fair enough. It just appears they are a bit further along in the background then the wins and losses suggest. But I’ll too wait it out and see.
Hopefully the Tigers get their act together as soon as possible as I’d much prefer be following their success than assessing others.
 
Great result to move Gildart on. He just wasn't up to NRL standard with us. It will be interesting to see if Bennett can get anything out of him. He seems like a nice young man so I hope he can get his career up and running again.
You do have to ask, though, who was behind signing him in the first place.

Can’t be Maguire because I recall we were looking at signing him to replace Kevin Naiquma back in 2018.

I would be shocked if Gildart can do any better than be a backup at any NRL club.

Usually a fringe NRL player has the ability to occasionally play to first-grade standard, and the real issue with being a regular is simply being able to maintain consistency. In other words, you will see performances form that player that are certainly first-grade level, even if it is not every week.

I haven't seen any first-grade level performances from Gildart. I can appreciate the effort and he seems like a good trainer, and he has quick feet and isn't afraid to take a hit-up, but just his lack of physical presence, lack of speed and an inability to read in defence - all reserve-grade quality attributes at best.
