Wests Tigers Coaches

Since Maguire was judged on results, I assume you expect the same here despite what is said in the media.

We were 13th when Madge was sacked. If we don't improve on that next year, will you still be cheerleading?
Sheens cheerleader here - I am backing Sheens. I am backing Benji and Robbie. I don't consider myself to a feint hearted supporter. Maguire had 3.5 years. I don't know how Maguire's fate was determined and I suspect we will never know. Benji is signed for 3 years as coach so after that period I assume he will be reviewed?

So in all that waffle you're saying no, Sheens will not be judged on results. Gotcha.

So what is your opinion on Benji's reported comments about playing a different style of football - more instinctive?
Well that's Benji isn't it. A comment coming from someone who hasn't coached.
He however knows that expansive football is less predictable but you have to earn the right to do that and that begins at training.
I remember back in 05 Sheens saying that Benji was doing the flick passes and side steps during training so he allowed it to happen.
Benji did say that attacking shifts are virtually non-existent atm so he wants the team to feel comfortable using the football.
In 05, the whole side was suited to expansive play, they were more of a touch football side really but there had to be a balance.
Enter Payten, Gibbs, Lafranchi and Skando to name a few. They worked the middle to allow expansive footy.

Just because you have never coached before does not mean you are not a good coach. I am old enough to remember Gus becoming the Bulldogs coach at the age of 30 (if my memory serves me right). He turned out alright. Our own Premiership winning coach got thrown the keys at a young age also. In my opinion the best ever. Ill back Benji - good luck mate.

aaaaaaaand there we go a mere 24hrs later than I predicted.

With this big reveal, my job here is done and Ill leave you all to your compulsive Brooks loving/bashing.

Its been fun for all of you having me back but this joy, like all of lifes joys, is fleeting. I must bid you all adieu again.

I'd like to thank all that have made this return possible, all the true believers and even the ones that didnt want to believe but in the end, the truth is all that matters. I'd also like to take this moment to think of our fallen comrades, like Tigermaniac, where ever he may be.

Before I go, I give you a parting gift. A final nugget (for Tigermaniac) of truth that will enrich all of your lives. In my absence, many will claim to know the truth. You will see many false prophets like @tigerap , @tigerballs , @Chammass and especially @Lee's fedora but know this..........if you didnt hear it from me or @THE_POM its probably bullshit. Dont be fooled by cheap counterfeits.

Sorry to hear you’re getting sacked mate.

You know I thought I’d hate this and it might fail but we haven’t made finals in 10 yrs and we are dead last this year and none of the other options were inspiring so I’ve decided I’m all in with whatever crazy plan the club is going with because we needed change and we needed different and we got it
I'm with you. Nothing else has worked so far. Insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. Granted it might not work but for the first time in a long time to me it's refreshing to try something new. The club wasn't exactly being inundated with top notch coaching candidates. I'm hoping that Benji with his media profile, contacts, respect he earned as a player and above all quality human being can just be that catalyst to finally get this show on the road. Let's get behind this appointment..GO TIGERS!!!

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I've interpreted your initial post incorrectly but I took from it an implied suggestion that the poor squad would impact any coach. I'm of the view yes there are gaps in our roster but our results could have been better if we had played a different style of football? Also the roster was put together by the previous coach.

Sheens will coach for two years and Benji for three years. Isn't it a forgone that Sheens will be here for two years to mentor Benji and Robbie? That's the way I have interpreted the announcement.
We've sacked 2 of our last 3 coaches before their contract has expired and the other one walked out on us, so the data tells us it's anything but "forgone" as you put it.

Sheens cheerleader here - Sheens is here to mentor Benji and Robbie for two years. The Board has acted to improve on-field performance. I support this, do you?

My opinion - it means players backing their natural instinct on-field whether in terms of decision making or opportunities to score. The opposite is a regimented style. The good teams can do both like the Storm or we are seeing it now with the Broncos. It's good to watch.
I agree! You summed up my response. Playing 'eyes up' footy and not so focused on following a set structure for the 6 tackles. It requires the hooker & halves to be more instinctive & forwards to use more 2nd phase play with fullback often backing up following play (eg Hodgson).

Billy Slater won Origin without any 'Coaching Experience'.

Coaching is less about tactics and more about roster.

IF Benji can attract new talent, inspire emerging talent - assistants can be deployed to take care of technical stuff.
Slater also showed essential leadership qualities when he played.

Gould was 30 when he started 1st grade coaching and took the Dogs to a premiership in 1988 in year 1 after retiring in 86

Sheens retired in 82 and started coaching Panthers in 84 (age 33) and took them to their first ever finals series in 85.

Bennett started captain -coaching with Ipswich at 26

Benji will be 40 when he spends his first year as head coach and will have had 22 years in the NRL across playing and coaching including 2 years as an assistant.

Just my opinion.

some May see it as jobs for the boys or the club being silly about DNA shit and the like but, for me we are talking about three guys who are staking their reputations and putting their balls on the block.
both BM and RF are competitors, they want to win that’s how they played and by all accounts that’s how they live their lives. I don’t think they would take the job for a payday. They are all well paid already so why take on a shit job.
I’d like to believe it is for something more than money.
the question is will they be able to pull it off. If they surround them selves with good people and some additional players(which I hope they are capable of attracting) then I think they can.
interesting times ahead and I hope some success.

I am a huge Sheens' fan. I've never forgotten what he did for the club or the style of football played. I'll be hammered for this but Tim Moltzen was one of my favourites - pace, step, passing etc. Good in the halves and at centre.

In his prime and not injured ill never forgot the combo he had with benji, those looooong passes they would fire off and the inside fullback pass up the middle.

Had his issue in defence but attack was class.
