Wests Tigers Coaches

Yep eyes up footy only works if you have the talent to execute it and the players to defend it. We don't have either in our squad. Our only chance of competing is mistake free footy and getting into a position to attack

The second approach doesn't work either. I mean it might jag you a win or two but you can't do well in the comp without playing good attacking footy.

The reality is we need better players. It's not that bad in that we don't need a massive rebuild or anything like that. We just need to improve the squad by adding in quality players. They can come from the junior ranks or be bought in.

We also need to retain the right players when other clubs come in to offer our players contracts. This part isn't easy. Look at all the talent that leaves Melbourne.

We just have to hope/pray that we develop a good squad and we can move up the ladder. I'm not worried about the coach at all right now. We have to wait and see but I wouldn't be over the moon with any of the alternative options being here either.

I will, yes. I've stated while I don't agree with the decision I support the club.

You however were calling for Madge to be sacked for the last 2 years. It's only fair that Sheens/Benji get the same treatment if they are not winning, unless there is another reason why you support Sheens so strongly?
Sheens cheerleader here - I didn't want Maguire on the day he was signed.

I have no connection to Sheens other than a great respect for his ability as a coach, knowledge and love for RL and WTs.

Has anyone told Benji he’d need to give his media gig away? I feel he has the personality where he wakes up and suddenly he feels in the mood to do X. Its probably not something he wanted to do the day before, and won’t want to do it the day after. If he’s always had a burning desire to coach over his cushy media gig, then I’m a pigmy from Africa. As for the club, I feel like lack of interest from any real candidates lead them to throwing their hands in the air and trying something they feel is innovative. At the same time, they must have licked their lips at the PR potential, and to romanticise the hell out of it, which they did in the press release with Pascoe waffling on about WT’s DNA. While Benji definitely wasn’t the best candidate, which I’m sure they would know, they’ve gone the route of trying to drum up excitement amongst a supporter base that is feeling very jaded and over it by appointing a club legend who is a popular figure. His appointment is for positive press more than anything else imo.
Have you forgotten that he initially signed with Souths last year after calling Wayne and asking him if he can come and help out with coaching? Wayne convinced him he still has something to offer on the field and hence a different deal was brokered.

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I've interpreted your initial post incorrectly but I took from it an implied suggestion that the poor squad would impact any coach. I'm of the view yes there are gaps in our roster but our results could have been better if we had played a different style of football? Also the roster was put together by the previous coach.
I agree with that. Originally I was referring to a poor roster can be a coach killer.
No matter who the coach is and what brand of footy is played, the better quality players are capable of carrying out plays.
Some players no matter how good the coaching is just can't deliver or are incapable of sustaining that effort.
We need some players who are basically rep players.
Rep players have the skill and knack to fit into an unknown team and deliver, no matter what the game plan is.

As you may have gathered Iam not in favour of the coaching solution the club has delivered. I can see what the club is thinking and why they have taken this path and I am not privy to what happened with the other candidates. So maybe, this solution was forced on them.

One thing I do know is there is no magical solution any coach has that will turn things around at any club that is struggling. Strong roster, depth, hard work and a happy roster..plus plenty of luck, are the main ingredient .

I guess as much as anything the club is banking on the Benji brand name to attract players and get all the negative media to dry up.

I personally would have loved to have got someone like John Morris and taken a more traditional approach, rather than the left field approach of grand dad and grandson. Anyway time will tell and there is a chance they might just wing it and a few people like me will get plenty of egg on their faces

For me, I enjoyed Cleary's coaching. He got the best from his playing group in the most. His press conferences (accept at the end) were positive and the press responded accordingly. While I did not like how he left the club, as a father I can understand why he did it. I just wished he stayed.
Agree best coach Pawsy but as a father, disagree with the father excuse.

As your kid goes through life, hundreds of thousands of people are directly or indirectly having an impact on your kid.

You try to instil the values and let them go. Make them independent, help when needed.

Ivans values were selfish beyond measure, let down thousands of people, another 29 players and their fathers who trusted him so he could dominate son.

He taught his son it’s all about Ivan. I’ve told my kid don’t do what Ivan did. Don’t be selfish.

It’s not the kids fault, it’s an Ivan’s control issue.

Nate can’t leave home at 45.

Ivan is a rat and will never be forgiven for forsaking us and all those on the bus.

Good coach though, point well made.

LOL I used to think toxic masculinity was a thing that inferior people made up to feel better about themselves . But as I get older I realise I was totally wrong . Guys like you are what they’re talking about .
As for the bully comment . The fact you make out like someone who was bullied is inferior , is all I need to know about how low of a bloke you are .
But I’m going to let you in on a little advice I give my 8 year old . There’s always someone bigger and tougher than you are , and likewise you being bigger and tougher than someone else . But the thing is you never know which one you are until it’s too late .
You still sooking?
My god man look after yourself.

Listening to Benzi in recent days, I’ve concluded that he’s functionally illiterate.

I am too, but I’m not lined up as a 2nd class space cadet for Timbo or studying to giving press conferences explaining the most recent loss.

I suppose the forwards will understand him ok.

Honestly think they're crazy for benjis 5 year deal, but I'm all in aswell he can't be any worse than Jason Taylor. Reckon him and sheens can attract some quality players, I'm expecting some roster movement in the next few weeks with guys going and arriving I'm excited to see who sheens can convince to get on board.

We can only hope that’s the case mate

Yep I.e. I’d prefer you as a player rather than a coach

I wonder who had the idea that we needed a coach with a lack of experience?
I hope it works, I really do want this dream job not to turn into another nightmare, but it does look like we’re taking a huge leap of faith after we found coaches were just as hard to sign as players.
Stay tuned for the next episode of Tiger Town B.E.N.J.I, Benji was his name..😂
Is it illegal to poach players on his show?

Nah your taking the Mickey out of it.
Marshall also went to Brisbane under similar circumstances and was credited for mentoring Milford and the other young players. Wayne knew what he had to offer the Rabbitohs squad.

I've read most of the thoughts and opinions on here but I don't think people realise the importance of sports science. The physical, mental and emotional aspects of it all.

Benji and Farah can teach them skills and maybe instil footy smarts (although I doubt it because they never got it), but managing each and every individual's physical load, understanding the science behind every player is so important. I have no doubt that they can't even comprehend.

We know what kind of coaches are likely to succeed now. It's not the instinctive ones that teach skills, it's those who are able to manage the team and manage players. You can either get it through experience or you can learn it externally. Both have neither.

I saw a 2 minute snippet of Benjs 360 interview. First sentence he mentions 2003, second sentence he mentions 2005. I've heard Smith and Slater on multiple occasions and they barely mention their premiership/s. Even they've moved on from their premierships 2-5 years ago but these guys haven't won from a 20 year anomaly.

I really want this coaching plan to work for the club but I have doubts. I am not sure about signing Benji as head coach after a 2 year assistant coach to Sheens gig. If it works well for the 2 years then yes by all means then offer him a contract but not yet.
It may not be a popular opinion but Benji loves the Wests Tigers when it suits him. I haven’t forgotten his wearing a rugby union jersey while playing for our club. He was on tv recently (celebrity apprentice) parading around in a South’s jersey. I just feel like Benji is all about Benji & his media buddies.
I am not saying he wasn’t a brilliant player, but he was also part of the boys club which caused a lot of issues. This just feels like jobs for the boys, feel good fairytale to try to make the public & media love them.
I hope it works out, I really do but it has the potential to be a disaster for the club & we really can’t afford to go backwards, then again I guess wooden spoon is as low as the table gets.

I’ve seen people state that Benji has been acting as a part time coach for 5 years now.
Surely that translates to him standing out the back chinwagging with the training staff so he can get out of the 400m sprints everyone else was doing?
