Mid Week Competitions

I'm curious to know how many people enjoyed and miss the mid-week competitions like the Panasonic Cup.
For me the mid-week game was a highlight of the year especially since we had some success.
The Balmain Tigers got the Panasonic Cup honours in 76, 85, 87 and earlier in the Craven Mild Cup 67, 76. I guess it all started for the tigers in the City Cup 17, 23.
Our learned Magpie friends may know more about their history with mid-week or preseason comps.
The off season is always long and uninspiring for me. Covid has also hindered to progress of of COE and Juniors where not much footy was played.
I'm thinking that after the end of the Grand Final you play all your rep games including Indigenous Rd then instead of having trials you have a mid-week comp with unlimited subs and quarters to control heat exhaustion.
I think that this could be played in January night time viewing. This way injuries can be looked after before the season proper starts.
Thoughts???

Always looked forward to the mid week games, back in the day.
I'd reckon the season length will start earlier when the new team/s join the comp anyway, so that might naturally fill that summertime void.

More video memory than head memory. Sorry from me.

Yep good point. Unless your a cricket fan the off season can be soooo boring. Thankfully my injuries are behind me now 🤞 and I can play more golf.

As an old Balmain supporter - I loved them; Leichhardt oval on a Wednesday night - we won quite a few as well. I remember we won one night there in a close one (maybe vs the slimes?) when Brian Lockwood (!!) brought out an inside flick pass for Neil Pringle to score under the posts - I think I am remembering it correctly - anyone other desperado's remember that? Edit: it was the Bears....

Mate I can recall that yarn. Have you heard the infamous tale of someone urinating in Neil's schooner glass?

Too young to remember them but wish we had an nba kind of scheduling. Obviously more the games nearly every day, not the back to backs.

I think this is a great idea @Cobarcats

The challenge would be how you juggle injuries and scheduling. I can't see how it would work in the summer period.

Perhaps two conferences with some games midweek during the normal season or a two-tier comp with relegation and promotion?

I've also liked the idea of a expanded origin concept with a mid-season break for the NRL, with NZ and some pacific islands included along with NSW and QLD.

The sport could be earning a lot more from tv rights with some creative thinking.

Whilst it may be a nice diversion, I think those midweek days are gone.
Everyone needs some annual leave and I don’t think the RPA would buy into it.
That being said, we used to have a structured pre season tournament, which were really glorified trials, but they did have a bit more competitive edge.
That may work, but wouldn’t start till January.
And with the NRL talking about an earlier start to the season, there won’t be much time.
And of course, potential injuries before players get fit, would cause an outcry from clubs and fans.
Best we work on our tans, whilst keeping an eye out for great white pointers at the beach.

I like your thoughts.
95% of the workforce work hard all year and only get 4 weeks off usually at Christmas plus public holidays.
I know that the NRL guys have their Christmas break then go into preseason training but to me thats not really what we the paying customer is paying for.
The longer a player sits out from a proper game of footy the longer it takes for them to become battle fit.
On average the majority of NRL players don't have long careers so why not give them more games and more cash?
As far as injuries go I believe your more prone to injuries if your not battle fit.
To help with niggling injuries, maybe the origin series could be played over 3 weeks where there are no NRL games played.
That would also allow teams to address injuries and also players can to go to the SOO and bond.
I reckon we are heading for an 18 team comp which means more footy so maybe another comp would be too much, I don't know.

1976 final. Over 20,000 at HQ.
I remember a rather long night back at the Leagues Club in Rozelle. It was kept open until 3am or thereabouts which was unheard of, apart from the Cross, back then.

Hangover? 😎

Of course, otherwise you would be barred from attending future Tiger games !!
I seem to remember it was an I can’t go to work hangover. Egg and bacon roll plus large coffee, waiting for the pub to open at 10( hair of the dog).
Don’t really know how I survived those wonderful years. Now 3 scotches and I’m just about done. Pathetic !

I remember the Magpies winning it in 1977 from memory. The next weekend they got absolutely flogged. Apparently Tommy and the boys had been on the drink every night after there Amco cup victory. From memory I think the flogging they received was at Pratten Park.
