Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Former Raiders captain John Bateman has declared he has unfinished business in the NRL and is wanting to make another successful return to Australia.

Bateman literally sent a message to potential suitors, using Monday’s NRL finals launch to put himself in the shopfront window.

Bateman was released from the final year of his Raiders deal at the end of the 2020 season, at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, to return home to England and be with his young daughter.

The back-rower, who led Canberra to the 2019 grand final, is contracted to Wigan until the end of 2024 and the Super League outfit will not consider releasing Bateman without a transfer fee.

He’s already been linked with a move to the Wests Tigers, and also has a close relationship with Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett, who still has six spots left to fill in his inaugural roster for next season.

The club continually backs the players. That's our biggest problem. We have blokes like Brooks who don't perform and the club backs them by never dropping them and paying them more than double what any other club would
Yep, when we got shafted by the refs in the Cowboys game " LDL " really stood up to the NRL & backed our players. The NRL had not a leg to stand on, everything was wrong about that final play, from Holmes being offside from the kickoff, the escort penalty admitted by the NRL to be bogus to letting the Cowboys have a challenge but refusing the Tigers challenge. If you seroiusly think that is backing the players, that explains everything about the front office & why the Tigs are in the mess we are. .

Hope it's not Knowles, we don't need yet another Hooker/makeshift other role position player in the side.

His missed tackles and lack of meters per game would fit right in with the current mob though.

If he is signed makes you wonder what are out scouts doing in QLD Cup & Reggies.....

I honestly believe that if the club made 1 strong decisive action the impression of the club could change.

For me that is getting rid of Luke Brooks.

Having a bloke on that huge huge coin in the most key position perform so poorly for so long without repercussion or him being held accountable is a huge reason why we have this losertown reputation.
Agree 100%. Plain and simple this is going to go down as the "Luke Brooks era" marked by nothing but failure after failure.

When all is said and done, he might go down as one of the worst players to play the game relative to the number of first grade games he's played. To play nearly 200 games with his lack of quality is remarkable but more than anything else, a pathetic reflection of where our board and management are at, as well as previous coaching staffs.

If they're signing him to play 13 and allow Hastings to go back to 7 and punt Brooks I am ok with it

The problem with this comment is that Brooks performs as good as any of them. Putting the boot into him isn't right.

I basically agree though that our biggest problem is our top players don't perform. It's not just Brooks though. It's Doueihi and Stef as well. Laurie should probably be on the list too.

Players like Liddle and Simpkin have also not come on.

Injuries hurt us but the reality is our top players are not top players.

What else could Lee or the front office do ? They couldn't do a thing. It was just a dud call.

When players realise they can be getting paid 150k or more extra at another club and be given the starting position they want, it can initiate them to start causing enough unrest to make their current clubs consider releasing them from their contracts.
Although a club like the Roosters would not want to lose local juniors such as the Butcher brothers, they would have to be considered the least valuable of their top 17 in the forwards.
As for Lomax, I believe if Wests Tigers offered him 1 million per season and fullback spot, he’d be the type of person to make enough waves to do whatever it takes to get a release.
He’s a genuine match winner and I believe he’s worth 1 million per season playing fullback for us.
Wests Tigers have been victims of these type of negotiations many times, about time we get on the front foot and making players of value to us feel much more wanted and valued than they are at their current clubs.
I realise it’s against the rules, but it doesn’t seem to stop other clubs.
1 million a season for Lomax? And people wonder why we are in a terrible position

Is that a sneaky pointer mate or just your own thoughts?

I would take Siro back as he has the ability to play edge and middle at this stage of his career. Knowles, Siro and maybe Lawrie gives us depth.
Just my own thoughts, but heard he’s been scouted by a few clubs. Also think he’s better on an edge. He’s a Hudson Young/Crichton type player. Runs hard and hits even harder in defence.

He is the only one worth taking from Super League imo. Made the SL team of the year for the last 3 or 4 years in a row. Only 25 years old.

Lomax isn't a 1Mil player and if we paid that we would be nuts.

I wouldn't have any issue at all getting the Butchers here, wanted them when they were off contract and think their prices will only increase over the next 2-3yrs. They are good tough players that our side needs.
