Why, he is a half who wants to play half, yet we feel the need to push him to lock to accommodate a bloke who has had 9 seasons to stake his case and failed

Faagutu is going to be a very special player at 13. At worst we keep Hastings for next year and then he leaves. Faagutu will be just about ready to take over in 2024.

If he is I don't see why we bother playing Hastings at 13. He was our best half. Why not let the other guys prove who should get the 6 spot. Brooks was playing as a 6 anyway.

Brooks and Doueihi. The 9 seasons to me is irrelevant. Who is going to perform better.
I suppose you can just delay the decision. Brooks and Doueihi are both signed up next season but then they are gonski. Re-sign Hastings, see if Faagutu comes on and then adjust.
That means no long term signings for Brooks and Doueihi. You pick one.

Hastings went well at 13 but Faagutu (I read) is possibly the best junior out of Qld for a long time. I doubt Sheens views Hastings at a half.
Don't forget Matamua also Paws. I'm looking forward to seeing these guys develop under Sheens for the next couple of years.

Yes, Matamua is very impressive for such a young player. The way he handled his debut in the NRL was very level headed.

I thought he was outstanding for NSW in the under 19s origin. Distributing, offloading, running, defence, work rate - he did it all. I know it was only under 19s and not first grade but for me it backed up all of the wraps he has been receiving.

Our team in a couple of years could be very different to what it is now. In many ways, the style of football to be played may well dictate the type of player in the side especially in the crucial positions. Laurie at 6 if we can get Staines excites me.

To me, the only time we looked genuinely threatening in attack was when we had Brooks and Doueihi in the halves and Hastings at lock. I feel sorry for Hastings not playing the position he wants, but I think it's best for the team right now.
