Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

The abuse Williams took from Ricky's media puppets was terrible. The kid had done it tough living thousands of miles away from home with a young kid on the way. Loved the fact that some of his teammates came out in the media and stood up for him because I've never heard a single complaint about Williams' professionalism before or since. He's not had a great season for Warrington - but only because he returned to a totally dysfunctional team run by a second-rate coach who let the situation at the club boil over. You'll struggle to find any halfback with a better short kicking game. Lethal.
I thought he did really well at the Raiders. I'd like to see him back in the NRL. Thanks for the information.

Well obviously Sheens and Co have seen something coz that is a name we never mentioned. Interesting to see what eventuates !
I imagine he will be very cheap. A great short-term option while you are looking for longer-term replacements. I mean, even as a squad player he's good value at the price he'll likely demand.

Certainly need at least one class back in our recruitment drive.

I reckon we need one class spine player in the halves or fullback. I'd prefer fullback. I like Laurie but I think we could do better. You could even move Laurie to the halves if Brooks and Doueihi continue to under perform.

Welsby is the type of signing I'd love to see us get.

He's a very weird player because at various points in a game he'll appear in the fullback, stand-off, loose forward and the centre position. And he's usually the best player in all of them. As has been mentioned - highly unorthodox. Scares defenders because he can go off script at any point. Modern coaches hate those guys because you can't set a pattern to shut them down. Just wait till he gets his man body because he's only just 21. Not physically mature. He'll be another Wighton - but with better hands.

What his contract situation?

What his contract situation?
He's contracted at Saints for another couple of years. But contracts mean nothing these days. Especially when the NRL has so much money swilling around. Thing is, Saints are extraordinarily well off in terms of halfbacks. The scrum half, Lewis Dodd, is the most talented number seven I've seen come through in decades. And he's only twenty. They also have another kid in the reserves, young Harry Robertson, who might be better than all of them. The guy is a physical monster. I do know a lot of NRL chairmen and CEOs are over here looking at talent. We've never been this well off, really. With COVID cutting into the spending cap we've been forced to rely on youngsters a lot more - and it's really paying off. I doubt you could get Welsby for next season. But I do think he will be available in twelve months. But you'd have to initiate dialogue now because that's what the rest of the NRL talent scouts will be doing.

Welsby looked the goods v Samoa. Some classy touches. Sign him up Timmy
Waiting twelve months would be the smart option, IMO. Let him finish maturing physically before moving to the NRL. The Knights recently acquired the services of young Will Pryce from Huddersfield (son of Leon Pryce who was a GB player) and Kai Pearce Paul from Wigan. Pryce is absolutely electric off the mark and KPP is a monster centre/second row. But for me they are just a bit too young. Rumour has it Pryce has been given guarantees by Newcastle. Not sure about the sense in that. But it's Newcastle - so what do you expect?

After months of speculation, it can be revealed the 2023 salary cap will be at least $11 million, well above the projected $10.4m - giving rise to the prospect of the NRL’s first $1.5 million player. (DT)
At this point of the year, it gives more money to clubs and less players to spend it on. A lot of front loading will be going on I reckon.

If there's one thing I've learned about money it is that more of it doesn't necessarily mean a better competition. I saw what happened in the SL over here when millions were injected into the game by Murdoch and it all went into the back pockets of some very ordinary players. To use the words of Alex Ferguson - there are too many "Big Time Charlies" in the sport. I also think adding more teams to the competition can only have a detrimental effects. You are spreading the talent pool too thin.

Wallaby’s have and always will suck he would fit right in
That moment when he broke through three English tacklers and then dropped the ball with no one near him was embarrassing. Spent much of the game sauntering round like he owned the place.

Don’t forget how young this kid is. Still looked unstoppable at times. In 2 years you would have to think he’s the games biggest star.
He's got immense talent. No question. But for me either he or his agent are just a bit too interested in the business side of things. Got to remember what got you to the position you are at. Because the moment you allow off-the-field matters to encroach on your game - you're done.

It's more complex than just throwing money at it isn't it. The talent pool is already way too thin.

Not just that - The kid oozes application...
Anyone who thinks they're posting a news scoop on his deficiencies
- I think he'd be very well aware of what they are, and won't need any prompting to
work on them.

This kid has been training with first grade since he was 16... There's a reason for that.
He hasn't got a passing game yet because he doesn't need it / hasn't learned it out on the wing...

He will
