Juniors - Pathways General Discussion

Wests Magpies HMATTS summer squad named for 2023. A number of stars from their undefeated premiership progressing up to SGBALL, however, 3 names to keep an eye on...

Heamasi Makasini (centre), Alex Isdale (halfback) and Onitoni Large (five-eighth) - All 3 recently named in newscorp’s Australian U15 schoolboys merit side. Large one to keep an eye on especially, can see him being the next ‘gem’ produced through the junior ranks.

Australian Schoolboys Jordan Miller (Wests HMatts) and Chris Fa’agutu (Souths Logan) join the likes of HMatts champions Kit Laulili’i, Tallyn Da Silva, Lachlan Galvin, Tajh Colquhoun, Jeremiah Leatigaga, Heath Mason to move to Wests SGBall, joining Solomone Saukuru and Ofele Lene.

Interesting to see hooker Ashton Large also in the summer squad for Wests HMatts. Named in the Aus Schoolboys u15s merit side (along with Isdale, Makasini and Onitoni Large) at just 13 years of age.

As has been the case in the last couple of years, would expect maybe Fa’agutu, Da Silva and a couple of others to start in SG Ball (starts in February) then move to Jersey Flegg once the season finishes. In turn, would then see a few more Jersey Flegg boys pushed up to NSW Cup.

Seriously talented crop of junior reps assembled for 2023. Most important part now is some stability through the football department for longer than 12-18 months to give these guys a chance to develop properly with the support and exposure required.

SG Ball Wests is looking to have a very strong team this year especially with Faagatu coming in to the team making it 2 Australian Schoolboys playing
Interesting times ahead

That's a good question to ask the boss for the next episode, remember before covid on the tiger's website used to stream games live, nsw, flegg

It actually is a good question.
Unfortunately as it stands NSWRL retain all the rights to the content and the broadcasting / distributing is to their discretion.
Though they don’t cover all the games. A good question would be if WestTigers are in any position to source a dedicated media firm to provide fans with any content from the juniors outside of the NSWRL contract.
Either full games (not shown on NSWRL) or players to watch highlights or snapshots, training content, game highlights basically anything not covered that may be of interest.
With 2 rep teams divided by 100 or so Kms it makes it very difficult to watch all the games in person at the grounds.

I think the best thing about Benji taking over in 2025 is that these guys would have looked up to him for years and finally there may be real allegiance to WT in the ranks as a result.

Benji will bring in some good wonders that's for sure 👌🏻

Gee you'd think Faagatu would come into SG Ball and absolutely dominate.
He really shouldn't even play or train with the SG Ball guys. He dominated that same level, and the level above it last year in QLD to finish the season in QLD Cup. To demote him 2 levels down would be absurd and a waste of time. The only reason to do it is to build camaraderie and familiarity with the other boys from the 2022 Wests Matts team.

I reckon that's the benefit here. Sheens has said in the past about bringing guys through together with a winning culture. Put him with the boys who will most likely make up a chunk of our team in the coming years and build our future around them.

Does anyone know how to ask the question for the next ask the boss episode?

The two referred to are Da Silva (hooker - Wests SG Ball) and Large (five-eighth - Wests HMatts). Managed to wrestle Large back from the Roosters and retain Da Silva after big interest from the Raiders.

Heamasi Makasini, Ali Karnib, Onitoni Large, Ashton Large, Alex Isdale and Peter Taai all earlier this year named as part of the top 50 u15s players in Australia. All 6 will join the reigning undefeated premiers Wests HMatts side.

3 of the best juniors Karnib, Isdale (both Eels) and Large (Roosters) all found themselves in the junior rep systems of other clubs within the last 12 months. Won’t be highlighted anywhere but reflection of how hard the club is working that they’ve managed to retain/ bring all 3 back.
