Juniors - Pathways General Discussion

A few, but didn’t know their names.

Like I said, most of the best talent has already been contracted/selected and told not to trial.

I was only there for a bit, supporting some of my younger brother’s teammates who were trialling.

Ali Karnib and a few of the other kids who’ll play their first year of Matt’s next year were there watching.
All good.
Should be a couple of gun teams for Wests next year!

A name that popped up in the Balmain SG Ball summer squad is Jackson Lill. Hopefully if he adapts form rugby will bring in an injection of speed.

He’s a schoolboy speedster with big ambitions in rugby and hoping to fast track his success with some specialist help from a famous Australian Olympian.

Jackson Lill is hoping his rivals will blink and miss him.

The teenager is relying on his blistering speed helping fast track him in the game he loves and wants to do as a profession,

And he has a big gun in his corner helping in triple Olympians and one of Australia’s best known sprinters Melinda Gainsford-Taylor.

“I wanted to do everything I could to make myself a better player,’’ said northern beaches player Lill, who will turn out for City against Country in the U18 match at Bathurst on Sunday.

“So now I do a lot of sprint training two days a week with Melinda.

“She has really helped me speed up.

“I used to be fast at the start, hit my full speed straight away. She has taught me how to maintain the speed. My posture and technique has really improved as well.’’

Lill is a Warringah Rat in his final year at St Paul’s Catholic College Manly and also working as a plumber’s apprentice.

“My dad got me into it, he showed me how to play when I was about four and I just fell in love with it,’’ said Lill, who lives at Cromer.

“Now the goal is to be a professional player.

“I never made a lot of rep teams … I am a bit of a late bloomer, I was always pretty skinny.

“Now I am tall enough but trying to fill out.’’

His regimen in the gym and work on nutrition has seen him bulk up four kilos in the last three months.

“I’m pretty serious abut all this and Sunday’s game,’’ he said.

“It’s our last junior game. We need to turn some heads. We want to get our names out there.’’

I think I'm looking as much forward to SG Ball & Harold Matts this season as NRL
It’s looking that way.
Have to be patient though. The whole HMs 2022 premiership side is playing up in SGBall this year so maybe a bit young for the comp and the HMs side is featuring a heap of talented 15s and 16 year olds. Not expecting the same dominant result as last year which was effectively 2 years in the making (COVID)

Only time will tell if it works out for us but it’s hard to fault our junior retention and signings right now. We seem to have a stack of talent coming through. Hopefully with the COE and some coaching stability the stars will finally align for us again…

Some really good news guys and a big kudos to our Pathways program is that we have only lost 3 players from the entire 15-18 year olds that we would have liked to have kept from what I can see in cross-checking:

- Alekolasimi Jones from the CUBS, training with Bulldogs
- Patrick Young who Sheens liked & NSW Rugby Union U18 squad member, training with Bulldogs
- Oscar Jorgensen, NSW Rugby Union U18 squad member, to rugby union

This is an amazing result with 60+ 'identified' kids continuing on the pathway.

No problem with 18-19 year olds playing Ball. A few will jump straight to Flegg.

Wish we kept Jorgo

With such great news on our pathways retention up to SG Ball, I hope we have some good news on the SG Ball brigade into Jersey Flegg namely:

Dudley Dotoi (Qld)
Cathane Hill (Qld)
Herman Tofaeono (Qld)
Cayne Nicholas
Finnley Neilsen
Sione Vaihu
Vaka Aho
Tristyn Ball

Anyone shed any light on these guys or @THE_POM if you've heard?

I think this is really important take away from the squad lists.

Maybe just maybe some people who are at the club might actually know what they are doing after all.
