Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Staines wanted 3yrs from reports which would take him into Benji's years, from what POM and others said we were willing to go to 2yrs.

What would look bad for us is if he gets announced with us today for next year and then in 10 days or so he announces he joins a different club for 24.
A bit like the JAC situation when we signed him for 1 year.

I don't think Staines is going to get a fullback gig anywhere else apart from Bulldogs so I'm not too worried.

Seriously, Douhie is an “OK” player. He’s already on $450k and will no doubt be seeking an upgrade for his next contract.
He’s 24 (or thereabouts) he has quite a few limitations in his game (defence, tackling, pace, etc) and despite his age and quite a few years in first grade nobody is any wiser as to his best position (as opposed to his preferred position which is 5/8). There is an opportunity cost to keeping/re-signing Douhie. My preference would be to let him leave at the end of his contract (or sooner if we need his roster spot) and divert his pay packet and roster spot into more of a sure thing i.e. known position and track record of performance.

You can add around 150k to your number....
He's on around 600k (Already)

A lot of conjecture and hopefully another late-in-the-week @THE_POM update today.

I have a sense this is how 'some' of our remaining recruitment & retention will go this off-season into pre-season with some reasoning for it.

Charlie Staines - 1 or 2 seasons with 1st opportunity to cement fullback spot.

Andrew Fifita - 1 season for his experience, leadership & to offer 20-25 mins off the bench each week. A very good offloader which will suit our attacking style.

Spencer Leniu - from 2024 to replace Andrew Fifita.

A Tyson Frizell or John Bateman type - experienced backrower for 2 seasons to provide leadership & intensity and help the development of gun junior backrowers coming through.

Luke Brooks - to extend as halfback of the Tigers. I think he will want to be a 1-club Tigers player personally.

Daine Laurie - to be given 1st opportunity at 5/8.

Jackson Hastings - given the opportunity to extend for 2 seasons at Lock.

Adam Doeuihi - told he will start out at Centre and see how he & Laurie progress respectively in 1st half of season.

We'll also try a few positional switches such as Shaun Blore as a Prop, Fonua Pole as a Backrower & Tommy Talau as a Backrower.

I don't think we'll sign David Klemmer as we have an abundance of 60-min workhorse types (Offa, Twal, Pole, Stefano & Seyfarth). Our requirement is more impact type.

My feel is our big targets for 2024 onwards will be Dylan Brown or Jack Welsby to provide a Brooks-Brown/Welsby-Hastings combo and a top-line fullback (Tedesco, RTS).

You mentioned previously about his renumeration. After the WC, I assume he'll be seeking an upgrade or upgraded offers from other clubs. It's a watershed moment for the club to let him leave. I don't believe he is worth more to WTs.
It's hard to see him seeking an upgrade after having been sent off for dissent then missing a match. If Ireland beat the Cedars then the Lebs are shish kebabs for the rest of the WC. He will have just 1 chance to impress vs the Might of Jamaica. Hardly show reel stuff.

I think he is overpaid now. He is being paid on potential.

There is so much upside though. When he runs the ball he consistently makes something happen. He can do a nice little offload in traffic plus he can ball play. He has an awesome bomb. The only one who can put up a better kick is Burton. He can throw a great long pass to his right.

I hope we keep him because if he gets his game together he can be a weapon.

It's such a tough decision though because of the money he is already on.

This club has to stop paying on potential. They've done this for over a decade and its returned nothing.

Doueihi can do three things:

1. Back himself to improve as a player through the season and become a good first grade and be offered a contract in line with those improvements;
2. Take a contract renewal with WT in line with his recent performances in mind;
3. Take a contract with another club where they can risk it and pay him on potential.

So hope you're wrong about the Brooks part. Tigers will never play a finals game while he is a player at this club

That was a God awful song. Now it's back rent free in my head.
I was hoping the Penrith connection would help us with Spencer…… Api, Staines, Naden, Laurie. We now have a fair number of ex Panthers
For those old enough to remember, at one stage, many years ago,the Panthers were referred to as the Tigers reserve grade, the worm may be turning.

I should clarify, they were called that because a number of Tigers went to Penrith,
I’m not saying we will be the Panthers reserve grade, just that the trade is going the other way.

Nofa won't cost much as we can use all the long serving player allowance on his salary
Agree to disagree, his defence is such a big issue that he can only play for the Magpies from the bench or overseas for South Pole Sea Lions.
We simply have to say the end to mediocracy, so:
- No to Nofoaluma but Yes to Koroibete, Tupou, To'o;
- No to Twal, Seyfarth, Mikaele and Yes to J W-H, Josh Papalii, Saifiti;
- No to L Leilua, Garner and Yes to A Murray, A Crichton, Yeo
- No to Gildart and Yes to Manu

and the biggest NO to our Administration, and their SJWs that look only how to put the new restrictions on us and Yes to people like Politis, Crowe et al that don't take "we can't", "it is impossible" for the answer!
