Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

This is all inevitable, with the exception of 2 or 3 players, the rest of the side would not make a top 8 side. This is not the fault of Sheens and his team, who have been trying to recruit in a difficult market. This is the result of poor signings, over valued signings, poor retention. But most of all by a salary cap bent out of shape, by buying dud players and then trying to cover it up by putting square pegs in round holes. To get out of this we must clear the mediocre players from our roster, and this takes time, Once we clear the contracts ( end of 2023 for some) then the real build will start. I hope we get a couple more players for next year, but who knows?

All true but WOW! Coach Sheens has already been clearing the decks big time!

I've been guilty of getting excited about proposed moves etc & squad building.

But from Day 1, Sheens & Marshall spoke about the development & retention of the young players. Whoever we sign 'for now' is more a path for these juniors to follow. Maybe moving high priced pieces off the board to clear room for the young guys to take over is the best way?

Bateman and Thommo would hurt us very badly both are very much on the decline and would be costing us at a lot of money on our cap.Klemmer is a far better option in both value for money and output on the field imho
Decline... both playing currently playing for England. Both bend the line, mobile, agressive and have quick play the ball. Both under 30yrs and as for price, anyone coming to us will ask for a little more.

Klemmer Id like as well but for different reasons. If we are going to play Sheens-ball and the with limited options available for 2023, Im ok with short time deals in the clubs favour.

Exactly. We need to be looking at if a player would make a top 8 side. If not show them the door. We should only recruit from top4-6 teams and upgrade the rest from within. We have the money but will take 3 years before pathways soughts itself out

Rep players.... First Choice rep players.
Origin, Tier One internationals....

We won't get by with 2.
That strikes me as 'superstar' status, not 'decent'.

You'd be going a long way to get 12 players in a team of that status, short of one of the talent-hoarders.

The suggestion was that we can't break the 8 until we receive 10-12 of these types of players. If so, we're 8-10 (Origin, England or NZ) players short of finishing eighth.

Is that right?

No - I think 3/4 in different positions of the side certainly suffice.
Not all of them are considered 'Superstars' some are just super consistent players of a high level.
Even Teams like Manly (Who didn't finish much better than us this year) have Turbos x 2, DCE...
Knights have Ponga, 2x Saifitis, Gagai amongst others....

Blokes like Tupou from the Roosters isn't a superstar - But heads and shoulders above our wingers...
Elite players aren't always superstars, And you don't need a team of them to be competitive....
We had 0 - Eels had 5 or more and we beat them this year.

Been saying for years, With the squad we have - We've been over achieving in previous years...
(Bar this one obviously)
So I tend to agree here, it's semantics in one way, but important in another, in that, the word 'elite' I think is a better description of these types of players we're talking about.

e.g.
A superstar would be a Turbo
An elite would be a Tupou, Radley, Papali'i
and a decent, maybe a regular starter - Max King, Sivo, Riki

Just random examples. On this logic, I agree again, that 3/4 of these would go a long way to challenging for the 8. I think SeanT's first comment was a gross exaggeration and that we're closer to the 8, at least squad-wise than people may think.
