“The club first heard murmurings that John Bateman wanted to leave in July. After speaking to John, his agent and the club in question, we made it clear that we wanted John to remain at Wigan and the matter was closed,” a statement read.
“During the World Cup campaign, John let the club know of his desire to go back to the NRL. He asked to get the World Cup out of the way first, and then pick up discussions.
“With our desire to help England to do well in the tournament, we agreed to wait. After the tournament, John went on holiday and expressed his uncertainty regarding his future and requested time again to sort out in his own mind what he wanted to do.
“On Wednesday 14th of December, John informed us of his decision that he wants to try the NRL one more time. It has been somewhat of a frustrating period but the club now accepts that it is in everyone’s best interests that John is allowed a transfer from Wigan.
“In situations like this, there are obvious consequences. The uncertainty surrounding John’s future means that we have had to delay the squad numbers. The squad numbers have now been signed off and will be communicated between Christmas and New Year.
“Secondly, there will be no immediate replacement for John as players have their contracts agreed with their clubs.”

If JB last this contract with WTs it will be a first. Lots of red flags but if he delivers all well and good. It would be great for a risk to pay off, it's been a while.

Look his form last 2yrs has been bog ordinary but regardless he is a mile better than anything we had in our existing team across backrow and lock outside of Papa. Thought he was playing abit under weight at Wigan compared to his Raiders stint as well.

4yrs abit high for me but also means we have an international experienced winning backrower that will handover to the kids well into the Benji era.

Glad its done and we have another important piece snapped up.

He has got risk written all over him given his player history both in terms of contracts and on the field. His best is/was great but he has definitely got the air of being a mercenary for good reason.

We have paid dead money to get him here on top of 4 year deal on who knows how much - if he delivers great - but his history is there for all to see.

Only found out he was a Dad at 15 years old. Raised his daughter with Mum and still worked hard to be successful. This guy is a born winner, natural leader and possibly the game charger WT needs to reverse 11 years of failure.

His history is benign other than he has risen from very difficult circumstances. He won Dally M second row forward of the year but that will not stop those wanting to whack the club, Sheens or Marshall over the head.

Oh please you pick and choose who's history you want to target and who's you want to ignore. I hope Bateman has the best season of football ever next season and couldn't give a rat's who signed him and who didn't, but there is a risk with him and I hope we don't get burned like other clubs have before.

He went back once from the Raiders to be with family and now he has skipped out on Wigan's deal. Not a great deal of history to be honest. Does he want money or does he want his imissus To be happy by coming here. No one knows.

4 years is too long. 3 would of been fine. Who cares how he is in the last year. we can offload or retire him like other teams do these days.

Ie he'll leave of his own accord before the last year, just before he's over the hill.

I agree paws,Madge got the ball rolling after having his hands tied in regard to cap and money available..just a shame that he wont see his star recruits or be working with them,Benji and Sheens know that the WTs need to show winning performances,not aged has beens looking for their last paycheck..Klemmer,Bateman added into our pack with Api and Papi is a pack we havent seen for ages because of poor recruitment,Sheens knows we need strength and now we finally have it,they have to earn their pay,as does Sheens and co....
