David Klemmer signs long-term deal
Wests Tigers has signed former Newcastle prop David Klemmer on a three-year deal, with a mutual option for a further season.

Klemmer will join the club immediately after being released from the final year of his contract at the Knights.

Klemmer adds a wealth of experience to Wests Tigers’ young squad having played 194 NRL games across ten seasons with both Canterbury Bulldogs and Newcastle Knights.

The 28-year-old has played 19 Tests for Australia and 14 Origin games for New South Wales and is keen to make an instant impact.

“I can’t wait to rip into pre-season training, and I’m really excited about what’s ahead for us,” said Klemmer.

“I know Tim (Sheens) well through our time together with the Kangaroos and there’s a lot to like about where the club is headed.

In many ways it’s a new start for the club, and I’m delighted to be a part of it.

“I want to make a difference here and that includes helping some of the younger players who haven’t played a lot of first grade yet.”

Head coach Tim Sheens believes Klemmer has much to offer both on and off the field.

“We all know what David can do. He’s been one of the most dominant forwards in our game for many years," said Sheens.

I’m delighted he’s joined us, and I think he’ll be a great asset to the club.

“We have a lot of young players coming through our system and I know he will have a good influence on them.”

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe has welcomed Klemmer to the club.

“We’re delighted to have David and his family join us at what is a really exciting time for the club,” said Pascoe.

“I’m sure with his experience he will add a lot to what is already an exciting group of players and will certainly contribute to what we are wanting to achieve over the next few years.”

David Klemmer

The NRL market has been in full swing for 2023 with several stars switching clubs ahead of the new season.

What Klemmer can bring
Former NSW and Australian Test prop David Klemmer arrives at Wests Tigers on a long-term deal after gaining a release from the final year of his contract at Newcastle.

It was a win-win situation for both parties with Klemmer looking to tie up his future and the Knights requiring a halfback in Jackson Hastings.

There is debate around who won out from the trade deal but in reality, it's a fairly even switch. Wests Tigers are well-equipped in the halves with Adam Doueihi and Luke Brooks set to be the first-choice playmakers with Klemmer's signing an astute one.

David Klemmer has almost 200 games of NRL experience to bring to Wests Tigers.

The 28-year-old is still one of the more dominant forwards in the game who can churn out big minutes and a heavy workload.

Klemmer finished 10th in most metres made by props in 2022, averaging 155 metres per game - a feat even more remarkable considering he was restricted to just 18 games in his final year at the Knights.

Why it’ll work

Wests Tigers need a feared leader of the pack and Klemmer is an immediate provider after a decorated career in the NRL.

He arrived at the Knights in 2019 exactly that and helped usher through the Saifiti brothers, who both went on to play State of Origin, coincidentally at Klemmer's expense on both occasions.

The side ranked 14th in 2022 for metres gained while their post-contact stats weren't too much better.

David Klemmer made his Test debut for Australia under Tim Sheens in 2014.

After losing former skipper James Tamou to North Queensland, along with forwards Luke Garner, Zane Musgrove and Kelma Tuilagi, the signing of Klemmer should be able to fix that.

The addition of Klemmer will also ease any pressure on Isaiah Papali'i and Api Koroisau to immediately help the club off the bottom of the ladder.

Together, the three bring representative experience and a willingness to win, which is bound to pay dividends and rub off on the rest of the squad, who are hungry for success.

Klemmer will provide what has been lacking in our pack for quite awhile....
""plenty of go forward""which then puts us in scoring positions instead of the backfoot..
we can only stay positive and watch with great anticipation...

What do you think would be their main reason to win? Would they have individual reasons for wanting to win or is there a singular primary motive? Or a combination of shared motives?
How will Sheensy keep their mind on the job?

I think the proof will be in the puddin.
It's ok the have a pack full of rep players but this doesn't guarantee success.
If Sheens can get the right "chemistry" and it all clicks then that will be another feather in his cap.
The reason certain players make representative teams is because they can usually gel quickly to an unfamiliar side. They have the nack to do this.
🤞

The reason players play rep football is they have individual talents but combine that talent into a combined TEAM effort...

I get that but this would be close to the most respected rep experienced forward pack we have ever had.

Our recruiting has been spot on, each player outside of insert option is in form that we have signed / resigned from below

I don’t expect massive things in 23 but 24/25 we are building really nicely for.
Klemmer
Api
<insert option>
Papa
Bateman
Joffa

Please stop putting Joffa at lock coz imo he won’t be playing there. He’s not creative enough to support Bateman and Ice. I think you may find Bateman at 13.

IN fairness he did nto put Joffa at lock.

Like Joffa. He is not a lock.... Unless Sheens gets a hold of him, then he will become a Center/occasional lock !?!?

Joffa will be starting its either lock or prop.

Be surprised if Bateman is at lock to start the season.

Depends on the type of lock you want. If you want a third prop type lock then Joffa could be your man. If you want a ball playing lock then not Joffa, maybe Bateman.
With the cattle we’ve got, why wouldn’t we go with a more creative lock to supplement Ice and maybe Biore in the 2nd row ?
Joffa, imo, most likely off the bench, possibly for Klemmer when it’s rest time. But who really knows, at this stage.

Agree, I don’t know how Bateman goes at lock so I am guessing a bit there. He does strike me as an adaptable player with some ball skills. Excited to see the way Tim runs with it. Who’s your other bookend with Klem? Joffa, Twal, or Stef?

I’ve got a big wrap on Stef so hoping to see him really kick on this year. Like to see him taking on the line at pace. He’s a solid unit. With Klemm they can really set a platform.
I just think Joffa and Twal are more workmanlike. Won’t let you down but not very dynamic.

I’d start with Klem & Steph. I know Steph can play long minutes but I’d have him doing a bit less given our strength in the middle and let him develop more.
