Dallas remembered

He's from the era of my passionate following of the Magpies. The wests side of that era were tough and played to their skills. Dallas was a character and geez, Id have hated to be tackled by him or on his wrong side. I fondly recall Roy Masters talking about him in Fibros vs Silvertails. Yet he had a gentle side too. Lost way too early.

He was certainly a character , back then the boys used to head up to Rooneys for a few after training , Dallas used to have the epileptic fits , many a time the ambos used to bring him into Auburn Hospital the ol joke back then was we got the blokes number mate 😂

So when Gus talks about how violent rugby league was he was talking about this era?

Having watched football since the 60's i would say that the 70's were the most violent decade that i have seen. I would also say that the dirtiest player i have seen would be Jim Mills who was a pommie who played for North Sydney and at the time when he was here he had the record for most send offs in his career it was over 20 and probably still has not been beaten

Having watched the Magpies since the middle of the sixties, I would rate Dallas in the top 5 toughest magpies, along with Noel Kelly, Peter Diamond, Jim Cody and the pound for pound champ Tommy. My favourite Dallas story is of him volunteering to help the fire brigade put out a fire at a Lidcombe hotel.

John Dorahy tells the story of once running on the field crying. He was in the dressing room and the players had to pair up for the face slapping and he got stuck with Dallas.
One of Dallas' teammates ranks as just as tough as Dallas even though he was a centre. Ron Brodrick was as tough as they come. Roy Masters was giving a team talk and he singled out Ron as the man with the greatest hatred of Manly of anyone in the team. Ron ate up the fibros v silvertails theme and he would go on the field with eyes spinning ready to kill.

16 years old on the hill at lidcombe in '78 was awesome
I was a 19 yo then. Born and bred in Croydon, moved to the Blue Mtns end of 71 and then once a year would try to get to a Lidcombe Oval game- train to Parra, then couple of stations to Lidcombe and a magnificent afternoon watching my heroes. Most weekends when I couldnt get to there it would be Frank Hyde on the radio and Rex Mossop on the TV. My dad took me to my first Magpies game at Pratten Park when I was 5 (1964/65) or so- not too far a walk from our place in Croydon. Ironically Dad was a Saints supporter but had a huge soft spot for Magpies except when they played Saints.

I'd love those 70's days again. If I recall correctly Balmain sort of got the Magpies bad luck in the 80's, in being a damn good side but never quite able to really crack things. Magpies hard nuts in the 70's, Balmain hard nuts in the 80's.

I'd love to think there would be a good crew in heaven now for the 70's era Maggies- hope they're having a few, laughing and reminiscing about bashing the Silvertails. I miss them.
