I think it comes from the fact he was the only guy not used at all by Sheens in the trials.

He made his debut last season, yet was behind absolutely everyone in Sheens pre season pecking order. The club also gave other players NRL deals, but Kautoga only got a dev (despite already making his debut).

Potentially, IMO, he is the best of the lot. Offers genuine strike.

So, it would be a shame.

It seems such a stupid decision doesn't it.

Yes...I do not have any inside info, but my guess is some politics.

Balmain and Wests kids have been put into the NRL squad ahead of him...Kautoga is not a junior. We pinched him from the Sharks. He likely did not have anyone lobbying for him to get an NRL deal, and his manager would direct him to wherever he can get one.

IMO he should have been a priority...especially given he already made his debut and we need his type of player (strike / size)

U might be right, there were rumours earlier that the inbred dogs had signed one of our up and coming second rowers. It’s a shame cause he could be anything.

Some observations from watching the game

- first half was a snoozefest
- James took the lion share of the dominant startung front rower fainu replaced him for a decent period of time and both did a good job.
- first half the ex magpie, really quick indigenous player scored a couple of tries against edge of toupu and toa, didn't score down that edge in second half
- obviously standout Kitione Kautoga, tumeth, wakeham, Smith, Justin Matamua, bula
- can see why people r talking about bula

Roosters side looked pretty average but our guys next in linedominated
Alan Fitzgibbon appears motivated and has a point to prove.

He'll be one to watch this year in cup.
Has a chip on his shoulder and will be looking to make a statement... despite losing yesterday.

Prob motivated due to hos gf in attendance

Jahream Bula (debut) vs Roosters

1 try
1 line break
21 runs for 248m
7 tackle breaks
7 tackles (1 missed)
6 kicks defused
0 errors
Would be nice to see these numbers continue and he takes the first first grade spot by force. That would also mean something other than FB would need to be done with Laurie, and that could also be a good thing.

Sat on the hill to watch the first. Seemed to be in a happy place. Can't blame him

Fair call, but any idea who you would prefer to develop in his place? There isn’t a backrow prospect until you reach the 19s and Sukuru is more of a prop in Flegg.
I reckon his gone too and his manager floated the idea of being released early to see if the Tigers wanted to use the opportunity to develop someone else and well we didn’t release him.
Why would you? At least having him here for the year will help the other younger players grow and remain competitive in the 2nd tier.
Saukuru would be the one I would of thought of...played 2nd row all through juniors and is on a top 30 contract but playing Flegg. If Kautoga was gone, give him a chance to see if he deserves an extension. Other than that, Mansfield appears to have 2 years on his development contract and plays that position. Will be interesting to see who starts when he returns from injury. Boyling is another one who joined our squad late last year (but he would be a bit lower in the pecking order).

The development contract and $$ could have been used for an up and comer in a different position (Bula maybe).

Kautoga may end up leaving (I really hope not)....but I just don't believe that decision would have been made at this point in time.
