Luke Brooks #167

Real question is who's to blame for the Brimson try in the second half?
Wasn’t it DL who dropped the ball and gave GC the scrum.
Stef broke from the scrum but missed, no lock in sight and DL knew it was curtains.
Just one of those litany of compounded issues that we seem so good at.
And we wonder why we get so frustrated. That’s not a coaching error, it’s a performance error and happens regularly.

Since were talking Doueihi in the Luke Brooks forum.
Interesting interview:

His main focus was unforced errors. This kind of links in with Sheen's 200 passes. We can't be giving up the ball and I get it. Yes we shouldn't always kick on the 5th, but we can't be letting the opposition in.

The other odd comment, not much difference between Api and Jake T... Which I thought was interesting.

I'm a little less critical of AJ as Douhie was flat footed and not applying pressure. I think he had to commit but if he hadn't he may have done a job on Brimson on the inside. Maybe a bit of both. The key is that there was a lack of commitment from several players that led to the try. That is all about attitude and maybe a bit of fitness too.

Given this is the Brooks thread he probably should take some blame too - he does for everything else that is wrong with WT; warranted or not! 😉
AD = Lamp post for this try. He shon a light on a great big hole. Why wouldn’t you attack the rights side scored two down that side in the first half.

And LB was also shit at times.

Attention to detail is lacking from the front door to the back door of the joint. The Benji poster that had him winning a Dragons premiership, the membership packs, the long line of ageing broken players we’ve signed, the constant media slip ups and the leaks. The unprofessional stuff starts at the very top and that shit flows down all the way onto the pitch.

Doesn't help when one member of the admin gives an upgrade and a ridiculous extension to a reserve grade winger.

Blore had nothing to do with that try, was a terrible read from Talau.

Edit: just saw @Jolls post.

Edit 2: watching it again, we got caught out by the quick play the ball and it was a 5 on 3 that we had to defend.
Was going to be difficult to defend either way so it’s a hard one to judge in this instance.
Bit of poor coaching there. Titans ran that play (exit Fermor, Enter Fifita) in the second trial.
We should have seen that coming.
Who may I ask was putting the inside pressure on Foran?

I thought blore was caught too far in the middle.

Next set he did the hia in a tackle gone wrong. Bad day for blore.

I'd rather start with AJ. Limit blore minutes

The 5 on 3 from the quick play the ball is a separate issue. Backpedaling and then TT turning out when AD turned in is the poor defensive read that let them stroll down the middle. If they had all turned in, as it looked like Nofa had then either Fifita gets hit at the line or Foran goes out the back. Then it becomes a problem for Daino, the cover and the sideline.

The defensive issue we would be discussing then would be where was Daino and the cover.

The catalyst was definitely the quick play the ball, but that doesn't excuse the poor defensive reads.

It doesn’t excuse them, but it’s a systematic error and as you can see if the photo they are all trying to re position themselves whilst getting ready to jog back. Did they even have enough time to come forward and set themselves for the inside run.
Someone mentioned Blore, not sure if he was in the ruck from the play the ball but it is almost exclusively his job to keep the hooker and Foran honest by getting up in the line. From that Douiehi, Talau and Nofo all would have been able to take a step up.

So it's common for second row defending close to the middle. Thought more on an edge.
The second rower is normally posted beside the half on his side in defence not between the half and the centre. The quick play the ball has us on the hop so Blore and his mates that didn't get to the line should have been heading for the corner post as part of the cover.

Which leads me to blame Sheens for this.

We should be having a backline that knows what each other are going to do. Talau misread the play, but they are caught out 5 on 3. Defensive structure, wressling coaching, toughness. We should be having this ingrained in our team.
