Tigers passing game

The boys had some beautiful moments in the pre-season games, they pass the ball around really well but 2 intercepts. What’s going on with that? Any ideas? And what would we like to see them doing about it?

Common sense would say, try and pick their moments...

Sheens wants them throwing the ball around and practising 200 passes, all that.

I'd hope they practice some common sense and not go for it every time - too predictable.

Play smart - play hard.

Try 4 Twal, tmrw is the day.
Out the way, early.

There is a lot of last year's DNA in this team still. All I can say is the players that create points are not creating enough points and I just hope it's not inevitable

Passing the ball is great, but only gets you somewhere if there’s an overlap or if there’s a player who can get on the outside of his man or bust a tackle etc. The point is without first stretching the D, or alternatively sucking in the D it is too easy for the opposition to mark up. We must create some go forward first, get the opposition back peddling, create some havoc in the middle with runs that get over the advantage line and quick ptb’s.
This was the problem last week, too much side to side and not enough tough straight running and momentum. Api needs to get us on the front foot and rolling down the field - then we can start playing “touch footy”.

Run straight then draw and pass, not just stand and pass.

You know, I wasn't all that upset with the style.

The issues I saw were mostly with players getting in the way/not expecting or ready for a pass (was taught even if you're a dummy runner, be ready to catch it).

I'm just guessing, but it looks like Brooks simply has to make it clear to everyone what play they're running.

I also think a large part of this is down to both he and Api playing zero trial minutes; That's why at this stage I'm not too concerned.

Ideally they should be ready and firing for round one, but you don't win many premierships in March. Still, you get 2pts for winning in round 1, you get 2pts for winning the last game.

But if you lose the first 5 games you have less chance of gaining momentum in the rounds after that unfortunately, then when you’re over that loss feeling and you win a few, it’s too late.. you’re 9th.

Completely agree. It's why I alluded to getting the same amount of points no matter the round.

Top teams can afford to iron out the wrinkles and build throughout the season because they know they'll beat at least half the comp, but the tigers don't have that luxury.

Just hope they can get it together asap, because their draw gets tougher soon.

Bye - tough one

We created lots of overlaps and threatening play coming out of our own half. So many times I said 'hold the ball' only for them to pull off another attacking move and get themselves out of danger.

As others have said, execution was the issue and it was mainly after we'd successfully moved the ball down field through wide passing that they then stuffed it in the attacking zone.

I'm sure there will be occassions where this approach will bite us more, but I enjoyed the attacking play, despite being cynical about it in the offseason.

I'm willing to accept this is early season rust, though I'm not optimistic about Brooks getting it and making the right decision. Like nofo, he just seems to lack awareness about what to do and when.

The passing was fine last week, it was the catching that let us down.
Yes and no TT. Still room for improvement with pass selection eg Brooks twice cost us a try with poor pass options close to the line. No real flow across the backline.
Our backs better be ready this week coz Hastings, Ponga, Best and Gagai can really stitch us up.
And we must take our chances when in scoring positions. I repeat 45/8 inside 22s in our favour and 10 points. Bloody awful.

Like I said previously, last week was basically a third trial when 2 of the spine hadn’t played.
And API needs to shed a few pounds.
Hoping for a big lift this week.

Last week we played hot potato. This week we at least ran nearer to the line before passing. Next week maybe we can learn to draw and pass. After that we just have to learn how to count. Simples.
