Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

The one I would sell the farm for is Tom Dearden, I know that doesn't solve our problems now but you sign him up in November and do anything you can to get him here next year. Would be tough to pry him away from QLD but stranger things have happened...

Really? Great competitor but seriously lacks creativity and organisation. I don't think he is what we are in dire need of. Decent 5/8 with an organising 7 and creative ball playing fullback, but without that I see him as a lock.

The vast majority of people commenting on Lewis Dodd or putting his name forward, I would assume, have seen him play 1 game of football in the World Club Challenge. He did a reasonably good job.

Let's not forget, he is 21 year old, has played some half, but some hooker also, is coming off a ruptured achilles, and has played 34 games of Super League in total.

The hype train in this place at times is so hilarious it's almost concerning.

Pump thy brakes, folks. Goodness me.

Sounds like Lewis Dodd is keen to play NRL and St Helens is resigned to the fact he'll likely ask for a release.

“Lewis is a great young lad and like any player does, he has the right to sign with any manager or agency as they want,’ Wellens told Love Rugby League.

“We respect those decisions, and Lewis is with us in 2023 and is contracted for 2024.

“We’ll obviously do all we can as a club to try and keep him here. He’s a player we love and value and we feel he is instrumental to our continued success.

“But also, Lewis is a grown adult who can make decisions for himself. What I do know with Lewis and his relationship with the club is that it’s a respectful one.

“So any conversations that happen, whether that’s now or three months, six or 12, they’ll be done in the right way.

“There’s nothing more to really add on the matter.”
Get it done lads.

No chance.
They have their halves sorted for the next few years at least.

Such a baseless comment too. As if agents only have clients at one club... 🤣🤣

Dodd will partner Burton in halves direct replacement for Kyle flannagan

My priority recruitment targets in terms of needs & value for our team are

1. George Williams
2. Jack Welsby
3. Jayden Campbell (only if Welsby falls through, Brent Read believes he has a get out clause in his contract this season if he doesn't hit a minimum number of matches by a certain round)
4. Lewis Dodd (only if Williams falls through)
5. Aidan Sezer (only if Williams & Dodd fall through)
6. Blake Taafe
7. Kaeoi Weekes (only if Taafe falls through)
8. Connor Tracey
9. Nick Meaney (if other fullback options fall through)
10. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (yes, a 1-year deal for the enforcer/impact/leadership qualities he brings, a kind of Scott Sattler 2004 signing)

Plus didnt Brodie Croft win halfback of the year + Man of Steel 2022? Is Dodd really really better?

Sign Lewis Dodd (halfback). George Williams (5/8). Semi Radradra(wing). Thomas Jenkins(centre). Kayal Iro (fullback). If WT cannot sign Radradra then Kaeo Weekes or Luke Metcalf for fullback then Jenkins to wing and Iro to centre. Just my wishlist.
Agreed. Take a leaf from the dolphins. no real out and out superstar - just tradesman like solid experience with young& keen - a few months back most people were writing them off......

He did win Man of Steel Brodie Croft not sure about halfback of the year though. As for Dodd only one way to find out if a team is willing to take a chance on him.

A 21yo halfback who can beat Penrith in a competitive game. That’s an upgrade in all our eyes mate. Sorry.
I'm not saying he's not an upgrade.

He played well in that game. He kicked the winning field goal. It was a good moment.

However, it's 1 game. In said game, he made 18/18 tackles. 0 try assists. 0 line breaks. 0 line break assists. He made 3 runs for 18m.

So to say that he's a 21yo halfback who can beat Penrith is a stretch. His team, with him as part of it, beat Penrith. A team boasting Will Hopoate, Curtis Sironen, Sione Mata'utia and Konrad Hurrell, just to name a few. He didn't single handledly own the result any more than those other players did.

Just as Brooks last year wasn't the 'halfback who beat Souths in round 6'. We all know how overcooked that statement would be.

But again, he played well. And he may well be a good target to play halfback for us. It's certainly a good suggestion for this thread.

My point is simply that the exaggeration, the hyperbole, the overcooked hype over a single game, is silly.

Halves for Dogs if they don’t keep Kyle for 24 will be 6 Olaopu Burton 7. He’s the main playmaker now anyway so can see Burton being shifted to 7.

Half back Options: Dodd, Williams, Trindall, Pezet or a NSW half unsigned for next year. All hard to get a result. But we have to land one of them.

Five Eight Options: Weekes, Wighton, Welsby, Salmon, Hutchison, Croft. Possibly more, if we land a Fullback does Doueihi go back to 6? Why resign him for 24? Unless in the centres but I think we have better options now & Feledy next year

Fullback Options: Weekes & Welsby (again), Taffe, Kennedy, Averillo, Niu, Campbell. For me I'd be after Averillo, kid is 22, the dogs probably won't he resign him. He is solid, similar to a Drinkwater at the Cowboys. Does the job. Plus we could maybe even swap this season for Laurie?

Hmmmm Croft. If you see my past posts you will notice im no fan, but have a look at his highlights in the SL. Looks a different player, something that can happen to young halves when they go over there. I don't read too much into his running game over there as they don't cover the inside, so if you have a good step back into the ruck there is space, but his ballplaying and short kicking game looked good. He is doing things I didn't think he could do. I would love a lowlight reel to balance how often he comes up with a bad play though to get a better idea of his improvement.
