Wests Tigers to redesign Commemorative Jersey

Wests Tigers
Wed 5 Apr 2023, 10:34 AM

Wests Tigers remain as committed as ever to making this year’s ANZAC Round match in Round 8 against Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles a respectful and special occasion.

The Commemorative Jersey to be worn by our players for this match has been criticised because an image on the jersey does not accurately depict Australian or New Zealand troops.

As a club Wests Tigers is deeply sorry if the use of this image has in any way offended anyone. This was never our intention, and we are taking steps to rectify this.

We have taken on board feedback from our members and fans, and we will be redesigning our 2023 Commemorative Jersey, immediately.

Wests Tigers deeply regret any offence the use of this stock image may have caused and remains completely committed to honouring and respecting all those servicemen and women who have, and who continue, to serve.

The redesigned 2023 Commemorative Jersey will be worn by our team in Round 8.

These jerseys will then be auctioned after the match, with all proceeds going to our ANZAC Round matchday charity partner, Legacy.

Wests Tigers would like our members and supporters to know that, as a club, we will continue to embrace the ANZAC spirit, this year and in years to come.
Comparing this release to the one that was submitted to fox/nine less then 24 hours ago is remarkable. I would love to know who authored both of them. They are completely different and I would be shocked if the same PR/media person or manager were responsible for both. The first one - not our fault, it’s army, nrl and steeden’s doing. The second one - this our mistake and we are rectifying. Just absolute jekyll and Hyde stuff.

Told you it was our ‘pride’ moment.
Club decided to use the opportunity to pay tribute to modern warfare vets during ANZAC round and offended the ANZACS by doing so.
In a way I’m glad they admitted to their mistake and are looking to rectify rather then push through it with arrogance.

It's not even remotely the same thing, to put a stock photo of "a solider" vs putting the wrong kind of indigenous person down.

And yes I think people have already put some dumb things in this thread, like native Americans and a Pascoe Hitler on joke jerseys, but it's a joke so I'm not going to get upset about it.

If Tigers were 5 wins 0 losses this story would barely rate a mention, so don't pretend to me that you are offended on behalf of the ANZAC spirit of defence personnel because Tigers put an anonymous generic solider picture on a jersey.

Actually I'd be interested to hear from any real service-people about this topic, how they feel, not just keyboard warriors who assume to be upset on their behalf.
Oh right so only ex service men/women have a right to an opinion on this whether they're upset or not?
Everyone else is a keyboard warrior... Defensive much?
Stupid arrogant comment... But not surprising

Oh Mark have you become one of those guys now? You can't point out the insignificance of a topic, or at least your opinion about it, without being belittled as some kind of Pascoe fanatic. I thought you cut us long-term members a bit more slack. So sad.
The club has withdrawn the original jersey and is re-designing it... Hardly insignificant I'd suggest

Jesus Hank I hope those are real fair-dinkum Aussies on that jersey, not computer graphics silhouettes designed to approximate real diggers. I hope those are really Aussie slouch hats and not a British, Canadian, Indian or Gurkha slouch.
Whatever they are, I believe those images were quite effective in serving the purpose of commemorating ANZAC day, and in this particular case, 100 years since the landing at Gallipoli in April 1915.

Now that I think of it, I'm a complete fool, those bayonets were probably made in China.

Anyway whatever the arguments for and against maybe, I've heard that that have bowed to pressure and admitted that they got it wrong and will be redesigning the jersey.

Haha. I might wear this jersey while getting my covid jabs.
Harden up lads. We're still honouring the diggers by donating auctioned jersey sales to legacy.

I didn't say everyone is a keyboard warrior, I didn't point to anyone in particular. But the comment was that it is disrespectful. Disrespectful to whom?

I'd also love to know if anyone who isn't a Tigers fan is upset about the picture. A variety of opinions, and all that.

You are getting quite roiled up about this.
Haha don't think you know how I feel... Yiu can pretend to know me by using my Christian name... Whatever floats ya boat.

If you can't work out who is being disrespected.... Well I'm not here to educate you...
Try LU for opposition fans views... I guess they'd give as much a shit about our club as most here care about our oppositions

They are spineless. I would have doubled-down, printed 15 thousand jerseys, gave them out at the match for free.

I would have taken more than the 30 seconds they took in designing it.

I mean for Christs sake, how hard would it have been for them to speak to those in the know with Balmain Tigers and Wests Magpies and see whether there was a player from each club who enlisted and served in 1915 and included their likeness on the jersey. Paying tribute to diggers who both served their club and country.

Our fans would give a shit more than opposition fans because on top of the fact that a not-so-insignificant amount of people who follow the club would have either served or have friends and/or family have served, it once again makes our club look like a pack of amateur muppets.

Agree. They get some indigenous fella in to design the indigenous jersey, they should get input from ex service fans to design the Anzac ones. That being said, bigger things to worry about then jersey designs.
I couldn't care less if they ripped off the designs from wherever they wanted, it's the professionalism that's at question.
If we did get ex service fans to design one, we'd prob end up with a submarine on the front and the village people on tbe back
