Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Here is a suggestion which could be win/win/win for all parties potentially. Immediate club swap arrangement:

Jack Wighton to Cowboys for this season only
Chad Townsend to Tigers with an additional 2 year sweetener
Luke Brooks to Raiders for this season with a club option for 2024 onwards

1 - Cowboys get a gun 5/8 which may help change their fortunes this season, Dearden can go to half, Duffy earmarked to progress as next gen half in 24 or Drinkwater to half in 24.
2 - Tigers get an experienced, directional halfback
3 - Raiders get a running 5/8 and chance to look at him before investing long-term
4 - Wighton gets out of Canberra, away from potential fan backlash & potential team disharmony, chance for a premiership this season (long shot I know!)
5 - Townsend returns to Sydney where he's from, gets an additional year on top of his current Cows contract
6 - Brooks gets a fresh start out of Sydney fishbowl, can run off a more directional half in Fogarty.

In terms of $$$, we may need to chip in extra given this is Brooks' big $ year with us.

Thoughts / Roadblocks?
Anything where Brooks moves on is a winner, getting an experienced proven 7 to replace him is a no brainer

May not be unrealistic @finnzo .

A player we can offer his final contract to, has already achieved a premiership so won't be seeking that and is from Sydney originally!

A player that will have a point to prove, idolised Benji, someone that Benji will feel he can develop!
I went school with Josh, Jason from manly and was close mates with mole aswell (and Livai whos currently in our system), trust me every kid under the sun in our age bracket idolized benji, wanted to be benji, from his hair to the xblades, but theres a difference between idolizing someone vs. thinking they can develop you

Yeah I understand that but I wonder whether Josh (and I don't know him personally so am only speculating) may be one that would respond better to a combo like Benji/Api than Seibold/DCE in getting the best out of him.

More getting cuddled & encouraged if you know what I mean rather than a bullet in the media from your captain to motivate you. Schuster has that natural game-breaking talent too like a Benji that Benji may feel he can help nurture from his own experience.

I get the sense he may not be happy with Manly injury management.

I've heard comments from players sounds our performance team are conservative compared to other teams. Our injury rate doing ok too. Could be a selling point too.

Yes the number of soft tissue injuries at our club has really reduced this season touch wood. I can only think of Tumeth with his hamstring.

Our injuries have been predominantly contact or illness and we have been dealt an unlucky hand with ACLs again (Doueihi, Ngutlik, Jordan Hill).

Your question makes no sense.

If it gets rid of Brooks, no matter who or what, if its a swap deal for an esky of Gatorade and some strapping its a good deal.
The talk is for Townsend to PARTNER Brooks in the halves with Brooks resigning on a reduced salary (could be as low as $450k). So two halves for the price of one (supposedly). The question is, regardless who is 5/8th is Townsend the answer?

Townsend isn't very good but he's won a premiership and made the prelims. A lot more than we can say for our current halfback. If the Cowboys cover half his freight, then I'm ok by with him a placeholder for a year or two.

I have no doubt he will be one of the most competitive forwards on the pitch.

I reckon he has been a great signing. He is also a point of difference in that he can actually create something. I'm hopeful he can get better though.

What are the thoughts on bushing fonua pole out of lock and onto the bench then put luke bateman into lock depending on fitness and hopefully it would open up his ball playing aspect that we don't get to see as much as we should. I don't know what its been but in the last few weeks Pole hasn't looked like he wants it as much as everyone was saying he would. We have a handful of second rowers in development and if they are still not ready for first grade then maybe we could sign a cheapish second row to cover this. Even slot shawn Blore straight into second row wouldn't be that bad of an option.

I think they do this regularly throughout the game. Pole comes off and Bateman moves to lock. I'm not sure he is really a ball player. He just pops up in the middle and can off load at times.

So if we re-sign Brooks, do we get a $200k or $500k exemption for long serving player? I remember reading somewhere that under a new CBA it was proposed to increase from $200k to $500k but not sure whether it was approved. And we have Nofa who would be eligible too, so is it per player or just per club?

This exemption is hardly worth it. You get it for any player and it's 200k across the whole squad or something like that.

I understand it is 180k for the club we have nofo and Brooks that qualify e.g. make up the long service player discount

And that makes sense, We keep Brooks even though he is useless, but we can pay him less money.

And we get Townsend because NQL see him as no good to them anymore.

So we will get two useless players for the price of one.

MAKES A LOT OF SENSE IF YOU WANT YOUR CLUB TO KEEP WINNING THE WOODEN SPOON.
So Brooks needed a good forward pack to play off to return to his best. He got that!

But now needs an organising halfback inside him to return to his best.

We must be eliminating all variables!!!
