Joe Ofahengaue #240

Moving Joffa is not about this year. The question is, would you be ok with Chris Fa’agutu signing with the Roosters or Parra for 2025 because we couldn’t match the offers because we still had Joffa on $650k? How you answer that question should determine whether you are OK losing Joffa this year.

Few things on this.

1) more than half the squad is off contract over the next 12-18mths including Api & Stef (both MO for 25). If we continue to lose & show players are just a number they will leave.

2) we have millions to spend over next 2 seasons

3) if we are good and believe in those kids they will be signed on nrl deals that favor us initially into their 1st few years of nrl.

4) we have zero inbound currently

The argument makes sense in someways until you look at the top teams bench / squad strength in the forwards mechanics who make things just happen.

Blore, Seyfarth, Matamua are all better options than Joe for half the price.
It's all about managing a roster that's top heavy with forwards and short of backs.
All this angst about a bench/reserve grade player.
Ridiculous. Blore hasn't been up to it in first grade this season, and Matamua is time off being ready for first grade (I believe he will be the better choice eventually but isn't right now). Seyfarth isn't in the same stratosphere, if we replace Joe with Seyfarth that is a MASSIVE downgrade.

By the look of him after the game last night, he has played his last game for the Tigers.

I have met Joe many times and he is a great guy and does drive positive culture in the club.
I hope this does not destabilise the team. Look at his reaction after Stef scored he was pumped for the boys. He then scored his try in the second half and seemed to be consoled by Bateman.

Agreed the $600k for a bench player is too much, however who is being held accountable for letting it happen ( Is that why McDonnell is moved?).

Great guy and Thank you for his time at the Tigers but if he is an Eel then I can’t go for him as I dislike that club beyond words that I can put in the forum.

Sheens seems to want to keep the bloke. Joe seems sad to leave. Could it just be Fulton who has led this? Was Joe told he wouldn't be playing firsts if he stuck it out with us?

Only time will tell if it is the right decision.

Blore has done nothing since his run in with N Brown in his first game , not worthy of tying Joe‘ s bootlaces

Joffa is only 27 he has got plenty of footy ahead of him as a forward and the talk is they are trying to get Frizell. Don't believe Joffa leaving will impact on retaining any of the young guys.

I get the reasons why they want Joffa moved on, its about the money and the fact he's slipped down the pecking order. I do wonder whether this is solely a Benji call seeing as his contract goes into his stewardship, maybe Benji has had a chance to chew the fat with Fulton and they see this as a necessary evil.
I like Joffa and i see what he brings to the team is more than just on field but as someone said above if his contract costs us one of our guns coming through that isnt great. Personally i'll be sad to see Joffa go if he was on $400-450 he would still be here no doubt.

I'm going to miss Joffa the way I missed Elijah Taylor.

I think both were vastly under rated while with us.
Look I get the sentiment and I love both Joffa and Elijah Taylor.
Yet...

EJ was done. He was well and truly done and useless the last year we had him. Hey no problems, he was concussion hit.

Likewise I think Joffa has just been through too much here. I can't blame him... He tried his guts out and we got the wooden spoon. Outstanding forward, but I could just get that his hope may be gone.

Both will be missed, but I get a sense that Sheens wants the squad looking forward and Paps/Bateman will be focused on winning and building. Joffa is year 3-4 of Loosing and building so perhaps he is too much to turn around.

That wasn’t my point it’s Pole they want to play prop off the bench. Frizell looks like the recruit they are bringing in to play 13. May squeeze a few more years out of him in the middle. Has speed and can use the ball.

Not sure that’s the player I’d sign for that but looks like that’s the plan. From what I can see they seem to be pulling the right strings at the moment.
I just posted that frizzle has brought a house right next to Newcastle stadium so he ain’t coming

That’s crap we got heaps of cap this year and next year we got plenty of players off contract so this crap about we need cap to keep kids who are only going to get a small rise anyway

As one who has never rated his distribution skills, I noticed last night how much more fluid our ball movement was with him out there. He was actually playing the 13 role well, something we haven't had at our club. I don't know if that's a one off or if he's learnt how to play in the new attacking structure and can do it better than Pole. We lost that sharpness and the ball got bogged down again when pole replaced Joe.

From what I saw yesterday, Faagutu is going to be a star.
