Joe Ofahengaue #240

Remember when parra we dbags about the Stefano release? ie. they wouldn’t. I’m surprised we kind of helped them. Either way I really appreciated Joes work ethic and perceived passion. I’m a big fan and will follow his career for years to come.
Parra actively stuffed his development by playing him for 5 minutes off the bench and not letting him play reserve grade.

I guess as fans we have to sit back and see if Joe’s release was for a roster upgrade, roster maintenance or something more sinister.

It’s hard not to be cynical as in the past when this sort of thing has happened the club has never benefited. I am always worried when Pascoe make as statement to the tune “the player gained and we gained”

Anyway sad to see Joe go, he might not have been a super star but he had passion and club spirit and you rarely see that today

IMO it’s not about this year. It’s about freeing up his $650k in 2024 and 2025, freeing up a top 30 roster spot and providing a clear path into the top 17 for a young player in the future, presumably Chris Fa’agutu.

We don’t need anything in return from Parra because the club is happy with the above.

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong but I believe that’s the club’s thought process. Sheens has always been very good at providing a clear pathway to bring junior talent through to first grade.
Good reply. Fa'agutu is an outstanding talent and I'm not going to criticise the club for doing everything it can to lock down our talent provide them with NRL opportunities. Utoikamanu, Pole, Tupou and Bula prove we are on the correct path.

Club should change their mind, we have no one better for this season. If at seasons end you find a better alternative then go for it, I'm sure Joe's form will improve by then and you will have no problems offloading him given parra want him now even during a lean patch.
Which is more of a reason to keep him lol.

Really want to lose it with this decision but I will wait for a bit to see if we benefit from something this season now.
For the life of me I will never understand helping out another club mid season without something in return especially when we are still in striking distance of making the eight and the team we are helping out is only 2 points ahead of us.
Same , but unfortunately it's probably a chance to hopefully upgrade all this potentials' contracts for something different than we usually do. Now that the coaches seem to have recognised who deserves the upgrades. Believe in these kids , pay them decently but not over the top like we have done previously to the wrong type of players. I believe they'll be an excellent investment for our clubs future by using long-term contracts, gotta stem off the poachers somehow. Plus I guess it'd build a better happier core that want to play for each other and more importantly want to play for the Tigers. Wish it didn't cost us Joe but so be it. He was great for us when others had dropped the head and given up. Respect Joe , Stay Cool.

Do you know why he wanted to go?
I don't want to be critical of the decision until we see who the club replaces him with. But, currently I can't see how releasing a quality player, whilst we apparently already have plenty of cap space available is a good decision.
He wants to play more minutes. He’s a great competitor. I have faith maybe it’s misplaced but last years recruitment whilst running last was excellent. There is no reason we can’t repeat it and lock up some juniors which we have to allocate funds towards as well.

Hastings is a key example.

Look, yes I think we should have kept him. But you are right:
decent halfback, attitude changed.
But has not set the world on fire. Never a "gun" player and at Newcastle he is showing that the opportunity to rise from First grader -> gun isn't exactly in him.

Sheens has stuck with Brooks and to the Forums horror Brooks has found form (right, just before contract renewal).

Joffa is a good player. but a solid First grader. As Wayne Bennett said "when you are trading players, make sure you upgrade". We are going from Fringe graders -> first graders -> guns.

Sheens may be actually able to assess if a player has that 'next level' in them.
I think he's proven that repeatedly

Whoever organised that transfer delay til 1 minute before the NRL transfer deadline deserves a medal. Predictably there were the Eels media parasite buddies bagging us for putting the poor dears through such stress. Revenge (remember the Stefano experience and their undoubted attempts to get Isaiah P to backflip) is sweet!

Yea, and proven Sheens doesn't have it sometimes.

Anthony LaFfranchi comes to mind. The Beau Ryan/Chris H let go for Adam Blair aswell.
That said, this will happen to every coach Bar Bellamy and Bennett who seem to have some magic worked out.

But the Parrasites still got him this season when they wanted and needed him, we've never gotten anything off them.

Once again we have given in and let them off easy, loser mentality prevails in this club.

Apparently we've been shopping him around. You don't have much leverage to get swaps etc if you are trying to move the guy on

If Joe wanted to go, then don’t stand in his way and risk conflict disrupt our playing group. Bandaids now ripped off, he had a great last game for us and we all move on forward.

In context, I feel Lucy’s situation last year is a little different because he was one of the few first graders we had in a very disjointed group playing poorly. That’s not the case this year with Joffa.

Didn't we let Gibbs and Fifita go to get the useless Blair?
