Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

In the case of mbye, packer, Reynolds, matulino the contracts were huge and long for very poor players, no club would go near those contracts and those players were so poor that they knew riding it out in reserve grade collecting their salaries was about their only option.

You can offload average overpriced average players but we were stuck with those players. Gould is great at getting rid of players, but not even he can get rid of Luke Thompson.

That period of recruitment under Cleary and Pascoe was THE WORST recruitment by any team I've ever seen. They got duped, overpaid and accepted toxic contracts from other clubs while losing our best talent. They couldn't have done worse if they were trying to destroy the club and the biggest factor in our recent terrible seasons is that period.

Madge obviously struggled to connect and build the team, but he left the club a lot better off than he found it. I'm not lamenting or sooking about his sacking but I always felt this year was going to be the one where you could properly judge his coaching given how horrendous cleary-pascoe's recruitment was.

Tigers recruitment has been limited by our lack of appeal, but they've mostly bought well or taken a risk on players who didn't work out with only short term contracts recently.
That is very harsh on Matulino as soon as he knew he could no longer compete at FG he took a medical retirement to help the club (he had integrity).I agree with the rest of what you said

I’d rather watch Robbie play footy than some boring schmuck who passes the ball to someone else who can play.
He had the skill set that most current hookers would dream of. I remember seeing him run, dummy then kick ahead from his side of half way for Hodgson to catch on the bounce and run away and score. What modern hooker could do that or would even try it? To be honest, I couldn't quite understand the fuss about Cameron Smith. Yes, he was a great leader and organiser but, to my mind his greatest talent was manipulating the refs to his team's advantage. For pure talent, Farah had no peer.

Madge left us in 13th place, since then the club has won 4 games in 23 matches including 3 out of our last 11 with a far better side at our disposal. The problem is far greater than just who was our coach.

The club was garbage from management all the way down to the attitude of players.

I couldn’t have said it better, except you forgot the most important adjective when describing smith and that is cheat. He was the best at it, and everyone seemed to just turn a blind eye?
Anyway, back to the greatest Hooker I watched play footy, I was really disappointed for him when he had to leave and not be a one clubber, all coz of that knobhead scarecrow, and I also blame fruit pascals, coz it was on his watch, and he let scarecrow disrespect our greatest club legend.
Still love ya Robbie.

We need to start a secret group that goes around confiscating and destroying all footage of that debacle.
Another one of Fruit Pascals great ideas?

Whatever you think of the scarecrow, and I don't think much of him, he was only the assassin sent to do the job.

Those higher up in management and on the board were the ones pulling the strings and the stupid part is that the CEO then tried to make it up to Robbie by trying to cut a dodgy deal that ended up costing him a 6 month suspension, as well as a fine and 2 years of salary cap hits for the club.

Robbie is back, but the stupidest part is that the CEO and for the most part, the same board are still here as well.

I made a comment the other week that I suspected that the general footy public still hasn’t fully come to terms with just how good Smith was.
The above comment illustrates this perfectly.

His craft and speed were top notch. Funny seeing the runarounds. They are definitely back this year with Api and obviously the coaching staff reintegrating them.

And I suppose I'm part of the general football public that hasn't comes to terms with it Tucker? Because I don't agree with you? I've watched a lot of football and I stand by my opinion but I'm quite prepared to admit that it's only my opinion, just like you have yours.

No no no, you have it wrong. Tuckers opinions are fact, all other are just, well opinions.

Sorry hit the wrong button , one week on and still no explanation as to why joffa was let go , Or one leak about us getting any other players. Either we have stopped leaking or there is nothing coming

Yep fair enough, not his fault we signed him and he at least played with enthusiasm. However, he had known knee issues which had impacted his play for a couple of years before we got him and we offered him too much.

I didn't really mean to criticise any of them personally, I felt all those did signings tried hard but they were all just well past it or not good in the first place.

I think it was Wayne Bennett who said a few years ago that there were plenty of hookers that could follow a game plan but not many that could effectively control a game from what they saw in front of them. He named Smith as the master with Cook, Api and Fainu from Manly as capable. A few weeks later, critics were saying Smith was washed up in the lead up to Origin. Game one, I think it was on the first tackle, Smith dummied from dummy half and ran 30 metres straight through the middle of the ruck and Qld were immediately on the front foot. None better.

In light of the sub standard performances from our KOE Cup side over the past 4-6 weeks, surely there are plans to offload some players who are not playing up to standard and recruit a few fringe players who could potentially strengthen us and push for NRL positions, especially in the halves and outside backs.
