Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

In 2023, the salary cap is $11.45 million for Top 30 (excluding dev players whose cap was upped to 650k). I couldn't find the figures for 2024, so I suspect that in true NRL style, they haven't been ratified yet. So let's work with this figure...

If the Top 30 salaries were a mean, each player would receive approximately 380k.

Brooks, if resigned for somewhere in the realm of ~750k/ year, he would represent 6.5% of the cap. If you factor in the long-serving player allowance of 188k and assign it all to Brooks, that brings his salary to ~560k/year or 4.9% of the cap.

To put that in perspective, Moses, whose new contract is in the realms of (reported) ~ $1.25 million/season and who doesn't qualify for the long serving player allowance at Parramatta, represents 10.9% of their cap; more than double Brooks' share of ours.

Is he more than double the player?

Something along these sort of lines would be good for all parties, especially considering the lack of halves available.

Unless Munster, Cleary, Hynes, Moses or Reynolds come begging to play for the black, orange and white of course... (as some seem to think may miraculously happen)

Latu Fainu is listed back in Jersey Flegg for Manly this week against the Wests Tigers. I find that strange! I watched the replay of Blacktown's best win of the season in Cup last week and Fainu was good including 2 exceptional cover tackles and some nice passes to set up a try or 2. Blacktown is in the mix for finals while their JF team is coming last.

Anyway anyone going to our Jersey Flegg clash at Manly on Friday night will see Fainu & Bunting against Matai & Tannous!

Could just be them managing a young bloke so he doesn't get too burnt out too early. You're right though...he seemed impressive last week from some of what I saw which does make it a bit strange.

the Frizell links make plenty of sense. get Johnny around the ball more via moving him into the middle. Kepaoa could easily do a job out there on the right as well effective immediately.
Would Frtizell be happy to sign as a depth player?
He is not priority signing ATM as IP, Bateman and Pole are among our best players. And we have Matamua, Blore, Simpkins...
We need to prioritise, and spend our resources on fixing our weaknesses first, not to sign any player that may be available.
Our biggest weaknesses are halves, and we have to concentrate on getting BETTER players than Brooks and Wakeham. 🐅 💪

500-600 is way unders for a NRL half in todays market.
I reckon the offer (if true) is a Claytons offer.
People here are convinced he’ll play for less
- they’re dead set lying to themselves…

You might get an unproven kid for a couple years on that - not much more…

Forumers are funny - happy to pay a prop who plays half a game 700k+
But think an 80 minute player - in the halves will play for 350…

Dreams are free

good analysis. the cap is expected to increase even further next year which could drive Brooks’ percentage down even further. I think $750k at max is probably fair and I’d be fairly confident Brooksy would take that. the club has stuck by him throughout his slump, and now he’s coming out the other side. it’s a good deal for all parties.

Friz will play right edge mate, Bateman to 13. ideally we’d go to market for a guy like Scott Sorensen as that last bench player, would result in a pretty elite pack.

8. Utoikamanu
9. Koroisau
10. Klemmer
11. Papali’i
12. Frizell
13. Bateman

14. Da Silva
15. Pole
16. Twal
17. Sorensen

Very odd

These are my retention priorities for the next few months (the ones off-contract in '24 can be signed by other clubs from Nov-1):

Luke Brooks (23) - only due to necessity at the right value to lock away one part of our halves puzzle for 24.
Stefano Utoikamanu (24)
Api Korisau (24) - hopefully a one-year extension to rotate with Da Silva in '25.
Junior Tupou (24)
Starford T'oa (24)
Charlie Staines (23)
Brandon Wakeham (23) - ideal backup half

Imagine what out team would be like if we had any one of these @7 ???

Cleary - Moses - DCE - Hynes - Hunt - Keary, Burton - Reynolds - Hughes - Townsend - Hastings - Fogarty?

Don't bet me wrong, Brooksy is one of my all time tigers, We just need to keep him at the right price.
Burton? Can’t be the centre filling in at 7 for the Dogs is it? He is not better than Brooks.

If we were to retain Brooks ($650) and somehow nab Hunt ($1m) both for two years, that would make us a top 8 side. And if we were to grab Latu Fainu, he will take over in 2026, plus fill in for injuries before then (with Wakeham), we will be well on the way. Two big gets for us on the opposite side of the spectrum but would be a coup. Fingers crossed...

Let's hope so @Tiger Tarl but, the more I think about it, how would getting an 18yo Fainu impede the pathway for Large, Conti & Isdale.

Yes we probably can't pass up a generational talent in Latu Fainu but I think we'll still aim for Luke Brooks with an experienced halfback like Hunt with Wakeham as a backup.

He played in cup last time they played us. Very
interesting. I've held a suspicion that he has
been our/Fultons top target for a while now, he
would complement Brooks very well I think.
The Fainus were very close to Fulton and Des
especially Des' support during Manase's court
case. Now that he's gone and they have a new
CEO, and Fulton is with us as well as his bro
I don't think think we can discount it anyways
