I think we will be "Something". Just not in the top 8.

When I see what Newcastle have had to go through and how teams like Titans, Manly, Souths have missed the 8.... I know we are not at that level.

Our aim needs to be to go from 16th to 13 and get some pride back in the jersey. If we are serious about the 8 then we need to solidly work on removing our weaknesses as a team:
Defense
Grit
Tackling

Then work on getting an attack structure right.

I understand rebuilding takes time but for us to finish anywhere above the bottom 4 we will need a stand out year from one of our spine (alongside Api who is amazing). Look at Newcastle, without Ponga or even with Ponga out of position, they looked cooked. But as fullback and full of confidence they win 8 in a row or something. Same with tigers 2005, without Benji do we win? We need someone like Sullivan to have a flyer of a year to do something special otherwise 2024 is a consolidating year so that we have combinations ready for 2025.

yeah, they’ll be too much change with other teams outside of our own. We competed but was also didn’t have that edge. It’s likely a spoon three peat. The more important question is how we will look in 25 after another failed season. Will we have confidence the current team and staff can improve on it, or will we all just give up on the plan 12 months in?

How will coming 13th restore pride in the jersey?

They would need to sign Nathan Cleary, Fonua Blake and Reece Walsh to sniff the 8…

Not so sure all three of those signings are gunna happen

INTERVIEW WITH API

Those who have had Benji as head coach in 23 and being a failure may want to take not of the stark differences Api has identified between Sheens and Benji and who is the more tactical and attuned. You may also note that Api wil be baking charge from day 1 of pre season and he will be setting standards for everyone.

As the first real insight into a fractured and poorly performing system, from a player who has done it all, there are quite a few positives. A united playing group, an inability to execute the free flowing plan of Sheens in 2023, a more strategic approach to the game from Benji and the lack of leadership in the early part of the 2023 season (including from Api).

Of real interest to me was:
  • the significant difference between Api's discussion of Sheens and Benji. I am more positive hearing this from Api. With Morris to provide support and experience this could be a significant bonus for us. It could also fall flat on its face - but I am feeling more confident that it is workable now.
  • the cohesion of the playing group despite losing. This says a lot about courage and character. This is a foundation to build upon. Throw in a couple of halves that can dig into the line and we may be on the road out of nowehere finally.
  • his view of leadership in 2023 - incluing finding his own way. Leadership is the key to turing this around and if Api can use his leadership to set standards from day 1 this is a huge positive.
All we need to add now is a hard, smart centre with some experience in a winning environment and I will be happy to start the 2024 campaign with a young and nexpericed team with some real leadership to grow this team and our club. I fully expect inconsistency with such a young and developing side in 2023, acceptable only with a view to really kicking the arse out of the place in 2025.

I'm picking us to avoid the spoon and win a few more games. We will win six games to be exact, and that will be just enough to dodge the spoon and finish 15th on points differential.

Hot and cold season. A small run of form towards the back end with us finishing 9th. We also lose our round 27 match at Leichardt to miss out on finals on points differential.

I think that's the best we can muster up. I will be blown away if we end up any better than that.
