OFFICIAL Apisai Koroisau #263

Another Api related quote comes to mind.
Luke Brooks and AD were asked if having Api Koroisau or Jake Simpkin at hooker made a difference to the gameplan. Answer "not at all".

It basically means Sheens unstructured fast footy/200 passes was not going to work. As Api says "We didn’t know who we were as a team, we didn’t have any identity. I hadn’t really built that relationship with everyone".

Farah and Lawrence had a play called "bread and Butter" where Lawrence would know to expect an inside ball from Farah.

Sheen's plan sucked! We had strong middles and while we can pass to the backs more, we did not have settled combinations. Heck we still don't have a defensive structure.

Benji has a lot to fix. I can't believe Sheens came out of retirement to prove that Madge is a better coach then him. (it's a low bar).

Agree, Benji has said something similar about his playing days, that everything he did on game day had been practiced over and over at training. I don't believe him completely, but there's certainly some truth to the fact that even 'ad lib' footy needs to have some form of structure to it.
Players need to understand what the bloke inside of them are trying to do with the footy. You have to get the basics absolutely flawless before you start adding to it. You could see that our set plays this year were basically get it to bloke 'X' two wide of the ruck and let them create, and not only could they not create, they also had no bodies in motion to help them create.
Benji should be able to get them playing with more shape this year, and our halves & backs will look much better for it.
How will everything else go? 🤷‍♂️

Not trying to toot my own horn but I literally said this all year that our strength was our forward pack & trying to play expansive attacking footy with the backline we had was setting us up to fail. Api pretty much confirmed what we all knew... Sheens was holding the side back & once Benji gained more control we started to improve.
The writing is on the wall. Our current backline is/has been in dire straits. It's staring the club in the face. The club has more than enough money to recruit a much better backline than what it has at the moment.. . If ithe doesn'r react with a new much improved backline for 2024 it is a disgrace which the club has to live will have to live with..for for 2024 and many more years to come.years to come,

Unlike all our past pretenders, I believe API.

Totally understandable his hesitation at the start of the year, but he's proven himself this year and it's for other players to go with him.

Other thing of note from that apart from his not so subtle criticism of Sheens is that in saying we didn't have someone like Benji to drive the attack the way Sheens wants is really a criticism of how limited brooks is as a player.

It will be more embedded this training season. Cohesion takes time. Except for Dolphins. Didnt take long. Pretty good season. First time together.
Mate there in an interview from a few years ago when Bennett talks about his coaching it's about 15 20 minutes Long and goes into great detail but he goes on that footy is not difficult and getting the basics right tackle kick chase and under stress and fatigue you need a very simple game plan that's second nature and in the interview he talks about how he goes after players with different body shapes and skill sets and how the game plan is the base then he fills the team with players who naturally improve the game plan different natural skills the speed machine the eyes up player the tackling machine very smart man

There have been numerous reports now that Benji is surprisingly big on percentage play footy and then play off that. This is the only thing that gives me hope.

If we can get a former fullback to teach Bula how to inject himself into the backline, I expect Fainu and Sullivan to strip numbers much better then our 2023 halves. Even Sezer.
Totally agree on coaching Bula to chime into the backline and set up his wingers. Or through the middle and finding holes for his forwards. I watched Meaney and Walsh nail that so well during the finals and thought the same. He could learn a lot from doing some time watching videos of the champion fullbacks. He would be deadly.

I’ve watched many champion fullbacks and I’m no where near deadly
Could be just modest I guess
😂😂😂

Couldnt be bothered reading the fluff piece.

Api Koroisau explains major issues at Wests Tigers???

Blind Freddy can tell you, Lee, Pascoe, Sheens, no centres/wingers and Brooks.

Theres the answer Api, theres the answer.

Back in high school, under 16’s we went undefeated. Previous years we were 50% win ratio.

The difference was a coach that gave us a simple and effective base game plan. We all knew where to be and what was going to happen 2-3 plays ahead.

We were also coached to know what to look for and when to pull the trigger.

It’s amazing what a difference this made in such a short time. Same guys, same opposition, just a structure we could understand and we could reset to when we had the ball.

He a unique guy. One hand he says doesn't watch any footy then on the other hand has a deep understanding of footy.

Guess thats the benefit of being around good teams.

the two biggest things to come out of that interview is that Marshall understands what is required to compete in the modern game and that Koroisau will be driving high standards from day 1 of preseason with Bateman and Klemmer beside him. that's huge. providing we do some more work on the roster between now and January we could seriously rocket up the table.
