Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Good players definitely flock to clubs where other good players are - until they are looking for the retirement fund and or when there options are limited, then it becomes more about money.
Api spoke about it on the Ebbs and Flows podcast.

Said Penrith had all young kids on peanuts and they all fired at the same time.... so they have success but then they can't afford them any more and they start getting picked off.

Penrith couldn't afford him and had to let him go and move with the cheaper hooker options of Kenny, Soni Luke and utility types like Jaemon and Cogger (who both got scooped up too.)

I like the fact that Penrith look to be playing fair regarding the salary cap. They have had success via their juniors/pathways and lose talent every year. They are fortunate in that they have enough waiting in the wings that they can replace them and still keep on winning. Very well done to them!

In contrast, the Rooster tell us that player x took unders to play for them because they're winners. Then when player x moves on that frees up heaps of coin to sign another star.

In my opinion, Penrith losing players due to the cap is good for the game. Just wish they all didn't end up at the Dogs (well all except our Captain and probably the most valuable).

Maybe Andrew Kellaway could be enticed to his favourite NRL club with a wing spot - fast, strong & good finisher!!!

Wallabies' assistant coach Brett Hodgson has kept a notably low profile at the World Cup but he's made a big impact on fullback-turned-fan-boy Andrew Kellaway.

Australia's defence coach hasn't fronted the media in France since a brief zoom call last month but Kellaway has been picking the brains of the former NRL star.

Kellaway grew up in the inner west and is a big fan of Hodgson, now 45, and the Wests Tigers.

"He was a little fella with a big heart, he had a crack," 27-year-old Kellaway said of Hodgson's playing days.

"He's a Wests Tigers legend - he's been awesome - he's played in big games, plays the same position as I do so on a personal note, I found him incredibly useful.

"I didn't watch a heap of league growing up but I'm a Wests Tigers fan, so any Wests Tigers people coming into camp is a bit of a morale boost."

Hodgson ended up at Parramatta when Western Suburbs and Balmain merged ahead of the 2000 season, leaving as a way of of staying loyal to late Magpies great and then coach Tommy Raudonikis who initially resisted the change.

Kellaway joked Hodgson must still carry the scars because he wouldn't sign his Balmain jersey.

"I've got my Tigers jersey back at the hotel but he refused to sign it cause it's Balmain Tigers and he's Wests Magpies technically."

Gave you multiple examples.
It's OK to admit you're wrong.
RCG and Matterson aren’t examples if you are including those. The way you portrayed the Tedesco thing was that Farah actively stopped him from signing. He didn’t. After he signed, he could see that Tedesco wasn’t himself and offered to lend an ear. Tedesco confided that he did not want to go through with the signing, then Farah went to the club. As for Woods, he was under the impression Tedesco and Moses were going to the Dogs with him and was left like a shag on a rock. Deservedly so.

Cleary signed for them for less than a couple of other halves in the comp. according to the media.
Does that sound like they're all above board.
All clubs cheat. Even back in Anthony Mundine's day he talked about $100k per year that he was paid on the side.
We're just the suckers that don't know how to do it.

What a champion Hodgo is!

They were not my examples (RCG and Matterson)

Strong Cope.

Players do discuss these things and it's as simple as that.

South Sydney has announced the retention of Michael Chee Kam and Dean Hawkins on one-year deals, securing the pair for the 2024 season.

I guess we can look forward to an October filled with players resigning with their current clubs. Then a November full of players signing elsewhere for '25. I still think signing a year in advance is not right, but that's the system currently.

Fortunately for us, we have Api and Bula and the young halves locked away. Any others we need to announce in the upcoming month to stop a WTF meltdown?

Our gain is another team's loss AND vice-versa. We just hope to end up on the right side of the ledger at the end of trading.

Players genuinely being willing to take unders to sign somewhere is very, very difficult to police. If memory serves they have rules in the collective bargaining agreement in Major League Baseball that restrict free agent players from taking deals that are significantly less than the best offer on the table. But that wouldn't work in the NRL: the money isn't really big enough to force someone to move to New Zealand or Townsville over, and anyway players can make a legitimate argument that 800k a year playing for Souths or the Roosters is a better deal than 1m playing for the Tigers or Dragons because of the side benefits of playing for a prominent, successful club. That's before you even start on the idea that players might not just be about maximising their earnings year to year and may actually want to win things even if it means giving up a few quid.

Once you acknowledge that it's potentially legitimate for a player to take what might not be the biggest offer you open a loophole you could drive the team bus through. Maybe Cleary took unders to keep playing for his dad and with his mates; maybe there's brown paper bags being handed over. Short of catching him red handed, how would anyone ever know?

The Cleary's were a package deal... IMO dads $$ were inflated yearly salary to compensate his sons so called unders $$
