Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

He may be right but he certainly isn't saying it with Luai's best interest in mind. The guy is an A Class ahole who looks out for no one but himself and his son.
He’s a great example of why you never idolise anyone connected to the club. When he was here, there was not a more beloved figure in the history of the club, The love for him was so over the top. Then he did what he did. He blew up the club, almost to the point it was sabotage.

Thoughts on Ivan coming out in the media warning clubs on considering if luai is a main man 1m play maker?
I reckon it's a very gentle nudge out the door.
What he said was not overly disparaging of Luai, but it certainly comes from a position of arrogance.
Basically put's the ball in Luai's court, you think you're good enough? ok go see how good you are, see if you can handle the pressure. See if you're any better than, Capewell, Kikau, Cricthon, Api...
Otherwise stay here, where it's comfortable and we'll pay you what we think you're worth.
When you've won 3 straight you don't have to grovel on hands and knees everytime a contract negotiation comes up.

Ok. So, if you’re saying we’re not chasing Manu and or Welsby, who are we chasing? Any 18yo rugby players from Ireland?

Like I have said …. The media links them to every big name player …if true or not … it doesn’t really matter as they never end up signing them …

My advice would be to worry about how it might impact on Bula after it happens ..i would say right now that there is a 99 percent chance that if fit he will be the starting fullback Round 1

Would you stop eating apples because you found one bad apple in the barrel? He did leave Brooks open ended, it was left to Madge to tie him up. So he had our ceo and board convinced.

Thanks for the advice 😂 but I’ll leave it to you to worry about Bula’s feelings.

Excellent post.

Def strange comments from Cleary.

Basically "can he be the man? I don't know".

It likely will motivate Luai to say "hell yeah" and act as an excuse to leave.

Strange comments if he really wants to keep him.

Penrith's system is so good that a guy like Luai, who is a brilliant attacking weapon, is expendable. after the Grand Final, you get the feeling Penrith are going to recalibrate their attack after they saw what Cogger did for Cleary's game, where he effectively straightened things up and allowed Cleary to play second receiver.

given how well they manage their cap and the amount of dollars they allocate to their 'nucleus' (Edwards, To'o, Cleary, JFH, Yeo, Leota) and the guys below that in the 17, I believe they see an opportunity to alleviate themselves of Luai on $800k+ and back one of Schneider, Laurie or Jack Cole, all of which would be on less than $250k. moneyball.

for a team like us though, Luai is one of our biggest and best ever signings. he would transform us, both on the field and off it. given all the rumours swirling around you get the feeling there's a deal waiting to be done and Benji will be front and centre.

If Luai were to leave, I think Ivan is underestimating the impact it will have on his team.

This prospective out, not unlike Api's, will be more impactful than the likes of Kikau, Burton, Crichton, etc.

Their best player is clearly Nathan. But having Luai in the team poses a second legitimate threat in the halves and on the other side of the field. It can't be understated how much easier it is for defences to load up on a singular dominant half when their halves partner doesn't offer much, as would be the case finding a replacement 5/8th for them.

Penrith have made a habit on this run of having a (somewhat) experienced backup NSW-level half at the ready to step in when required, rather than a raw junior half. This is clearly a nod to consistency over anything else. We have seen this with Kurt Falls, Jock Madden, Jaemon Salmon, Tyrone May and more recently Jack Cogger. All of them came in, executed on a VERY simple game plan and allowed the class around them to get them over the line. I guess Brad Schneider is their 2024 model. But with a significant portion of that class leaving over the last few years, that will continue to become more difficult a plan to pull off.

Now, for all Penrith's junior nursery accomplishments, heading into 24/25 and beyond, they don't have an heir-apparent in the juniors that we have seen a clear pathway to being the obvious next in line, as Isaiya Katoa was before the Dolphins nabbed him. I know there's no shortage of talent there, but it doesn't seem the transition is right if Luai were to depart.

I think they're making a mistake by letting this run its course this way.

But also, it's Penrith, so f_ck 'em.
