2024 Pre-Season

Alex Lobb, 21-year-old winger from Dragons.

Won their Player of the Year in NSW Cup this year.
Great to see we have thought about what we were doing with the development system. Better to give the deals to guys who have been performing in NSW cup as opposed to kids. That way even if you get roped into giving a guy who won't play FG a top 30 spot, at least you know he'll be good enough to fill out your cup team. Too often we have guys in our top 30 who are barely reserve grade level. It's not good for the long term health of your top squad.

Navren WillettName: Navren Willett
Position: Centre, Fullback, Five-eighth
Age: 18 this year
Junior team/s: Taree Panthers, Taree City Bulls, Newcastle Knights Harold Matthews
2023 Age group: Balmain SG Ball (Willett will complete preseason then return home to continue playing for Taree in 2023 while he completes his schooling)

Willett, who already stands at 6’6 (not a typo), has signed a four year deal with Wests Tigers through until the end of 2026.

The first year of Willett’s deal will see him complete preseason with Balmain SG Ball before returning home to complete his schooling, where he’ll continue playing for Taree City.

As you would expect, Navren is a threat in the air and stands well above players his age, while also being a superb athlete.

Willett spent time in the Knights junior rep system where he impressed before returning home. Wests Tigers saw off interest from other NRL clubs and the Sydney Swans to secure Willett’s signature.

Like Jordan Miller, Navren possesses a unique frame and one that can become a real threat through the grades if developed properly.

At this stage, one to keep an eye on for 2024 more than 2023.
🔥🔥

Even though im not an avid close follower of the juniors, it seems this off season theres a lot of anticipation and excitement buzzing about the young blokes

Maybe its because theres been a lot of chat about them for some time more so than other years, I dunno, but im starting to look forward to seeing them come on.

Or maybe its just early onset of off season withdrawals

To be honest it seems like it's been nearly a decade since we had anybody coming through in our juniors to get excited about

I’ve listed the player names in that group photo at the bottom of Page 1 in this thread.
WE very much appreciate all the things that you do on here @KingRobbie , but I think the point being made by @Spartan117 was that it would be nice for the club (or the NRL if they are responsible) to actually do some of these things to help promote the club and lesser known players that are in the squad.

They do this every year...

It'd be helpful.
Same old.

So all the other clubs can buy them?

Seriously, how much do you hear in the media about star kids at other clubs coming through compared to ours. It’s all we do, bang on about our best kids…
Other clubs keep it to themselves.

Ours whacks em straight up in the shop window…
Being a bit over dramatic there.

Bottom line was that some people thought that it would be a really nice idea to have some names attached to some of these photos.

Most people have no idea who some of these players are and as supporters of this club most of us have a genuine interest in who some of these kids are and if it wasn't for people like @KingRobbie we would have trouble finding out.

Every other club have spies that know about our juniors and are constantly trying to pinch the good ones.

I'm sure all the other clubs talk up their kids too

Lol spies 🤣
Walkie talkies?
"come in Chief"
Wests Tigers need to adopt the cone of silence, actually now that I have mentioned it, it seems like in some cases they use it to keep supporters and even members of the football department including coaches in the dark.

Shows where we are as a club. The club doesn’t have much to promote. 05 was almost 20 years ago now (blows my mind), and we haven’t made the finals for over decade (again, mind blown). They have to cling to something that keeps supporters invested. Showing off kids who won’t be ready for 2 or 3 years is an attempt to give us some hope for the future.

You think - Or you guessing?

I can tell you,
There are others (top 4) club that I know (as fact), That don't even let the media guys publish
Training photos of some of their kids....
Going out of their way to keep them under wraps as long as possible...

I'm of the opinion with the Hudl they run, Everyone knows who every kid that's anything is anyway....
That's my opinion... I don't know.
I do know that hanging onto these kids isn't going to be helped by bigging them up at every opportunity...

How many people (Including here) knew the names Jahream Bula and Tallyn DaSilva this time last year
- before Sheens spent the off-season wrapping them deluxe...
Now the whole game is banging on about them?
Everyone bangs on here about our players getting poached by the bigger clubs,
the thinking that having them on show doesn't help, that is a bit naive for mine...

These kids are years off grade, and behind current players at the club....
and They're kids!!
What positives have ever come from over-hyping young kids?
It's Lunacy....

I don't see wraps or write ups about any other kids like I do ours... Bias aside.
Look at all the media talk recently about Galvin wanting out
- It might exist, But I don't see that sort of stuff about other 17/18 yr olds...
Honestly can't see the problem with the club releasing pictures of players at training and actually putting names to the faces, supporters want to know who some of these kids are and many would probably like to follow their progress and see how and if they actually develop into good players.

I was always under the impression that all clubs have talent scouts that go to games to check out players that have potential and this is how they determine potential targets for their recruiters, not to mention the barrows that are pushed by player managers on behalf of their clients.

I don't really see a problem with the club pumping up the tyres of young up and coming players and giving them a certain amount of confidence and encouragement.

The bottom line is that if some of these relatively unknown players are genuinely talented, then of course they are going to get noticed and targeted by talent scouts and recruiters from other clubs, that is just what these people do and is no different to what we do when we poach up and coming players with potential from other clubs.

Once again we come across that promise of potential that in no way guarantees that a player will actually make it in the NRL let alone having a career that leads to super star status.

Bottom line is that I think you are drawing a pretty long bow in suggesting that by putting names to the faces of players in training photos that you are putting them in more danger of being poached by other clubs before they have actually shown that they do have some sort of talent on offer.

Bottom line is that supporters just want to know who some of these kids are.

Your post nailed it! The long time supporters need something to cling to.
I remember last year leaving Lidcombe oval after watching a lower grade walking behind Joe Ofa.
who had been to the game to watch them also.
It was a good day as we won, and a chance to see the young talent show their talent. I found it was much more rewarding than watching the NRL side struggle to win 4 games a season. I enjoy the lower grades at the moment. $5 entry for old farts at Lidcombe and free at other grounds. And don't have to become a member to watch the NRL and their relentless losses.

PS.
The side tabled on Tuesday had no relation to the run on side.
The selections were all over the place, players up and down in grades, positional changes, jersey numbers etc.
And announcing the run on side a hour before the game doesn't help when your on your way to the game!
