He is very selfless. It's actually quite the opposite of the way he acts on social media, or the way he is portrayed by the media, seemingly all about himself and a show-off. But as a player, he is very selfless. He knows that people don't think he is good by himself, but he doesn't try and prove "he's the man" on the field (like Latrell would), but rather how can he make the teammates around him better. Need team players like him, not individuals. Watch the Storm game down in Melbourne and he had a hand in 3 tries after being behind 16-0 on the scoreboard. He is simply sublime to watch

I know this was a while ago but watch his starting debut in round 17, 2018 vs a top 4 warriors team that had a 100% away win record. Played halfback with Tyrone May and had one of the best rookie games. Don't think it's on Kayo but should be on NRL.com
 
I watched the Luai presser for the second time and I noticed towards the end the reporters asked "were you disappointed in the offer by Penrith?" and he said "no" (a 350K difference per year to what we offered) saying that "he wants to be his own man". Knowing how motivated he is by haters, I think the Ivan comment at the end of last year was the nail in the coffin for Jarome leaving and while his primary motivation is obviously the highest offer for his family, the opportunity to do something miraculous on the field seems something he is convinced he can do

Yeah I can only find highlights but I remember the game. That was his 2nd NRL game.

I think his playmaking skills have been stifled somewhat being under Cleary’s shadow and the structure and style of Penrith’s play that primarily revolves around Cleary. That said, he has still been a great compliment to Cleary in a dominant team, just not really displaying the playmaking skills that he knows he has.

I admire his decision to come to a perennially struggling team such as ours, so he can develop and hopefully showcase his skills more. I think it’s a challenge for him, along with the cash of course, it’s also a great chance for Luai to stamp himself as chief playmaker in a new environment and hopefully lift this team out of the doldrums into the realm of contenders for the first time in many years.

Yeah he was very good when we all first saw him... Not many new players from opposing clubs stand out and stick in the memory for me.... But he was one

Who did they have there before he cemented his spot?

We were all frothing at the idea of getting Mitchell Moses as an organising half. Luai got 2 less Try assists than Moses last year and 3 more Line break assists than Moses last year. In a team with Cleary the dominant playmaker, they are impressive stats.

I read his comments as being cognisant and respectful of the Panthers salary cap limitations - BUT it is hard to believe that he doesn't have a chip on his shoulder that the likes of Edwards - Martin and Nathan were prioritised so far ahead of himself - Crichton and others who have contributed equally to their success.

Hopefully the chip on his shoulder is beneficial to us and not just his own ego

The amazing thing about him is the amount of hate he gets that he's overrated unironically makes him very underrated with many parts of his game not appreciated
 
Ivan Cleary is the guy we have to thank. In an effort to try and scare off any buyers for Luai, by questioning his ability to control a team, he actually gave Luai the motivation to look elsewhere. If he took another approach and praised Luai he may just have been happy to take unders and stay put.

Thank you Ivan, not only did we finally nail a big fish, but we have a big fish who will want to prove a point and rub his last boss’s nose in it. You can’t buy motivation like that

I don't think people hate him... I think most criticism was the way he'd carry on when things were going well for them... Not for his football

It was a perplexing call at the time, which became a stupid call as it continued to drag out.
I think you’re 100% right. Cleary will rue the way he handled this.

think that the Panthers view him as 'expendable'.
They offered him 3 years but the $$$ fell short
