Australia Day

It’s a shame that 99% of Australians give the so called 1st nations 27 days a year to celebrate there culture, yet they refuse to let us have 1 day a year , and regardless of when the white people arrived , it would have happened , they are just lucky it wasn’t the Spainards they my have killed them all
 
It's just a date. We should be moving it.

I get the whole "they keep shifting the reconciliation goalposts" argument. Or the fact that we should be considered one country and people already, and this is just more polarization. Or that we're wasting effort not focusing on more material issues like helping improve outcomes in indigenous communities.

But man, why doesn't the broader Australian community just swallow our pride and try to put a hand out for reconciliation if it's important to the indigenous community?

Especially after the whole voice debacle.

It's an incredible, cultural building day and currently, it's being ruined by this date issue. Let's shift it before the PC police minimize the day to nothing.

But then the word  woke was hijacked by them.

Prior to this the word woke wasn't ascribed to racism .

it meant something else.

We can't change history.

Captain Cook and Anglo Saxon colonisation and control has massively shaped this nation.

We can't pretend it didn't happen or cancel it.

At the same time as a non aboriginal and non Anglo Saxon person I don't get this first nation's peoples concept.

Australia was always their country like it now also is ours.

But they didn't authorise other nations to come here.

Neither did most other people.

It was a concept decided non democratically.

What does woke mean @GNR4LIFE ......curious to see how many different opinions we get on this.

Personally ive never been interested, I dont think ive ever used it as I dont know what it means

I'll try and adapt and grow with new things im interested in or things that affect me but whenever woke is used its usually things im not bothered with

How about the broader 1st nations people stop putting there hand out for everything and give the people who do must of the heavy lifting that gives them $ 60 odd billion every year , that would be a 1st , u can’t change the past so just get over it and maybe they might find peace

Even that.

I mean the focus on Anzac day now has been changed to sacrifice and commemoration of the fallen however Gallipoli wasn't Australia's war either nor was any other war this country has been involved in less say the PNG rim in WW2.

It was all about British empire.

Dad reckons when came out in 1955 God save the queen was played at the beginning of movie screenings at cinemas.

So u say aust should not have been involved in ww2 because it was the British empire giving the orders , then maybe we won’t be having this conversation, or in German or Japanese

Didn't mean it in that sense.

The war with Japan was different and crucial to Australia.

But Sudan, the Boer wars, and especially WW1 was all about British Empire.

A bit like Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan peddling to American interest.

Australia wasn't under threat.

That's in no way to denigrate the people who were involved or made sacrifices, these historical events shaped this nation.

But Gallipoli was not purely an Australian battle nor did the people who signed up at the time know they'd be fighting there.

The Turks just referred to Australians as British .

England nor Australia was threatened WW1. British empire may have been if defeated......as it was even after victory in WW2.

The Dardanelles campaign did not need to be fought to protect England or Australia and didn't achieve it's objectives and ended in failure anyway.

But as I said earlier British colonisation of Australia has massively made Australia what it is today.

It has it's faults like all civilisations but it must be celebrated for the massive positive contribution it has made in every sphere.

Nearly everything Australia has been built on has derived from British empire.

It wouldn't be right to depersonalise the nation to ignore it.

Keep the date.
