Of course the question is what is the most appropriate day for it. As a 7th generation ageing white Australian I’ve started to finally, really think about it.
We currently celebrate 26/1 as the landing day, but our indigenous brothers and sisters refer to it as Invasion Day. Probably a 50/50 call, depending whether you were on a boat or on the shoreline.
Is 1/1 the correct day, when we established our own constitution ? Seems to me that would help solve a lot of dispute. Only problem is it would be a huge double header ( New Years Eve rolling into Australia Day), I think we’d need another holiday on the 2/1 called Recovery Day.
What other dates do forumers see as appropriate ? It’s a tricky one !

80+ % of Australians are proud of this date and Don't want it changed.
What percentage of stats are made up again?

The IPA - which has as much credibility as Get Up - recently commissioned a poll which found that 63% of respondents supported keeping Australia Day on 26 Jan. I suspect the results would be closer in a more credible poll though support for retaining the date would still prevail.

You'll notice I said 'many of these types', not all. Firies, cops, ambos, nurses are a minority in the collection of public servants. Many people on councils and involved with government companies are absolute bludgers and out of touch with society. A lot of teachers nowadays have elitist attitudes who use it to brainwash students their political opinions.
Ah so just many of them then? You’ve qualified your ignorant generation. Got some stats to support your ridiculous assertion?

You know what Yoss,I think that 70% of Australians are fed up with the minority that are the activists who just wont leave historical events such as this alone....
Many everyday Australians are happy to celebrate Aust day on the 26th of Jan and there are many people of differing cultures who have come here and call Australia home who look forward to the celebrations of the day...
Its the minority who cant let the past be the past, they want division to prove that they are right and have to go to any length to prove their point...
Truth beknown, most people want to share the day with family and friends, enjoy a good bbq feed,a few beers and be happy at the end of the day...
Australians are the most forgiving people on Earth, its only the few who have a chip on their shoulder who cant accept the day as a historical event but a crime against our indigenous brothers and sisters...so from my point of view I can only say "I wasnt there over 200 years ago so I can only go by written history that I dont know could be completely true''I committed no crime so I dont have to answer to anyone...we are all Gods children,it would be great if we could all let bygones be bygones and get together and make this country the best on the planet..
We can all dream....cheers and God bless all....

70%? Where’s that from?

Look I’m pretty agnostic about Australia Day. I can appreciate arguments on both sides and equally I think some of the hyperbole on both sides can be OTT.

I get what you’re saying about guilt etc and I do agree it’s problematic and unhelpful to assign modern values to historical situations. That said, I can see how celebrating the date you perceive your country was taking from you could be galling.

Cheers TT. We can only try right?

As an indigenous Australian born in Australia I think we should at least have a day or 2 a year in recognition of the trauma we suffer from socioeconomic convicts up rooted from their ancestorial homes by the oppressive ruling classes and sent to the colony on the other side of the planet. I still feel their pain everyday. Some days its very hard.

Not sure.

But they would all feel that there is an attempt to somehow change the identity of the country and cancel the influence of probably many parts of its development under British colonisation by a date change.

Probably a reflexive push back against that.
uneducated people may think that because they don't know better and are terrified of change.

Identity is not a constant value, it evolves over time. Australia in an inclusive and vibrant multi-cultural society. We are not made up purely of white British immigrants, they form a large part of our past, but not it's entirety.

It’s a shame that 99% of Australians give the so called 1st nations 27 days a year to celebrate there culture, yet they refuse to let us have 1 day a year , and regardless of when the white people arrived , it would have happened , they are just lucky it wasn’t the Spainards they my have killed them all
or the French who give up nothing - we could be eating croissants and cheese and speaking French... well... maybe not so bad oui? we could be South New Caledonia...
