Cricket Season Thread

Its clear to me that batting is our only issue in tests going forward
Normally when you don't win tests its because you can't take 20 wickets !
Well that's not our problem .Furthermore its remarkable how evenly shared the wickets are between our 4 main bowlers
Total Wickets 5 test summer 2023/24:
Hazelwood 25 .Cummings 24 ,Lyon 21 ,Starc 20 Thats 95 out of the 100 we took
FYI Career wickets Lyon 517 ,Starc 353 ,Cummings 263 , Hazelwood 263 .
Seems our Batting not so reliable !

Yes, our bowling group are ranked No.1 in the world for good reason.
The batsmen are very erratic.
 
A lot of unjustified back patting for the bowlers. How many ninth and tenth wicket partnerships did they allow to get out of control this summer?

Bowlers can generally bat now. Gone are the days where 8-11 were generally considered walking wickets. You have the odd bunny in every side but for the most part bowlers can grind out the odd half century and give even the best bowlers a hard time. Our bowlers do it frequently.
 
Cant knock the bowling 5 tests this summer and at 20 wickets per test that's 100 and our 4 main bowlers got 95 of them ,throw in a wicket here or there to Marsh and Green and acouple of run-outs then there's your 100 . Touring team bowled out twice in every test
Cant ask much more !
What is unusual. Is Batters only got 2 tons all summer that is Warner 164 in 1st test and Head 119 in the 4th test .That is a very low number

That means nothing because some bowlers hit some runs.
 
Just a word about the Poms:

England have registered most Test wins against India, on their own soil.
And, England are the last touring team to win a Test series in India.

Did with Lyons. My point is, Smith when batting with the tail has confidence in their ability to handle the situation. Other players would try and hide the tailender from as much strike as possible. As time was not an issue, I would have looked for my signal from ball three and any thing loose before try and hit the boundary. Of course it only takes one ball so a tailender can get his poles knocked out of the ground facing one ball or six. This is a spurious argument that simply doesnt fly in any high level of cricket. As soon as you start "farming" the strike, the opposition sets a field in response. They set the field deep in a defensive posture allowing the 1 but hopefully (for them) stopping 2 and 4's. When Smith was batting with Lyon, it was still a pretty moderate and gettable target and the right strategy was to bat they way they did so that the runs didnt dry up and the scoreboard kept ticking over.

Farming the strike, whilst it does reduce the risk of losing the tailenders wicket, drastically changes the tempo of the match in favour of the bowling side, reduces the scoring rate and increases the exposure of the set batsmen. It was the right thing to not protect Lyon. He can bat. I dont think he batted well, but it was the right strategy.

It was also the first test for their no 11 who we have never seen before and the WI have never seen under test conditions. Safe to say he is not an 11.

Lyon is good enough not to have to protect but he batted like a knucklehead.
I blame Lyon, Marsh, and Starc’s stupidity with the bat as the main reason we lost.
 
All our tail can bat when we are after quick runs to set a target, but when we need fifty to win a test it’s a different game. As the previous poster said it should never have been up to the tail if some of the other batsmen had shown better application.

Anyway the bottom line test cricket once again showed why it is the best format of cricket.
