2024 Season Opener, Las Vegas Discussion *Spoilers*

Yes and it took all of the Roosters guns to fire to beat the Broncs.
Brissie will go very close to the title this year.
Reynolds a year older, no herbie and capewell. Think they are worse of than last year the Broncos
No injuries think Roosters and Manly along with Penrith look hardest to beat for premiership
Think souths are buggered

No one has the right to tell someone not to be offended by or just brush off a racial slur.
They do when they report it and make a massive deal of it. I've received racial slurs throughout my life, mostly in school and I just moved on. Good blokes made those jokes and they've gone onto be great people. Everyone is prejudiced in some way for survival or for some other reason. Making a racial comment isn't as bad as actually hating a particular race. That would be racism. I doubt many of us here (who have travelled overseas) have found something not nice about another culture and described them as a whole as "rude" or made a racial remark at some stage. It's in human nature. Xenophobia is more common and it isn't necessarily a bad thing, new or different people require different responses. For example, I have been to Asia recently and some shop owners raise the prices for products they sell for tourists based on their skin colour and appearance. That would be racism

Why would he say something? To get under the skin & because he is dumb (if he said anything).

Mann reacted instantly to whatever was said & to make a formal complaint is a big step to take.

Times have changed, what was acceptable when a fair few of us played the game / just generally acceptable before isn’t acceptable now.

People shouldn’t be given an exception to saying something on the park that they can’t say off it.

Players have a heck of alot of coaching off the park about this stuff so to do it on the biggest international stage IF guilty shows how dumb Spencer is & his response after isn’t cool - should get smacked with a big suspension for stupidity.

Spencer also apparently had a run in with some of the Broncos back at the hotel after - the guy is a hot head.
You are right he is a hot head. He made a silly comment, not a racist one. Racist implies that his intention was to hate Torres Strait Islanders or Melanesians. Seemed more like a prejudiced joke that should be given a month suspension. If Mam cried at a racial comment he should toughen up. I understand his culture would matter to him deeply but at the end of the day he's still a 21 year old man and way worse things happen that are completely ignored. Such as the toxic misogynistic boys culture in the NRL that leads to domestic violence abuse and other sensitive issues. From what I have noticed, most of the people I have seen getting upset about this are white leftists from inner city neighbourhoods where multiculturalism is low, not surprising. Media, former players and those in privileged positions are the loudest minority on this only voicing one side with no definitive proof thus far other than an accusation and teammates (unsurprisingly) defending said claim. On the other side of the coin, most of the racist people who are using this as an opportunity to continue piling on Ezra's instagram real racist abuse are mostly white far right wingers. Only a minority of Aborginals and coloured people actually give a damn

Or Flegler - who was just as important as Haas and Carrigan!

Only bothered bringing on Taupau very late too (for good reasons) - so that bench spot should have gone to Willison

Souths need a new coach and to rid themselves of the Latrell-Cody cult!

Those two as shot-callers will never win Souths a Premiership!

Ego has overtaken actual ability!

Why are you talking about your experiences? It has no relevance to Esra and what he should accept

You have made alot of assumptions.

The reality is if he made the comment being alleged, the intent was to get under Ezra’s skin.
Leniu comments at the time and post game doesn’t help his case re his intent.
Ezra has every right to complain about it as the rules allow him to do so.

It has nothing to do with anyone else outside of Ezra and Leniu really.

Ilias is crap too they won't go anywhere with him at 7

Everyone is allowed an opinion in a democratic society. Not sure if you're tweeting from North Korea or somewhere like that but I am free to share my opinion, as are other Australians. If Ezra has a problem with me, a random person on the internet he has never met then he can take it up with me, but I haven't done anything illegal. I haven't said he lied so he can't say I defamed him, all i've said is he should deal with it and move on. Hate speech is illegal, what Leniu did wasn't hate speech, but it did violate the NRL rules. People act like racism is worse than domestic violence with the outrageous reactions that are visible everywhere

Well if it has nothing to do with anyone else then people supporting Ezra saying he's a victim should also keep quiet. Even if what was said is true, what happens on the field stays on the field. His own teammate Staggs called a patron at a bar a f***** (gay slur). I'm sure the nail polishing Mam would still find a way to defend Staggs and give a good character reference though.

Only watched Brisbane game and mini of manly but the actual footy was top shelf. No rust on the players. A few clunky parts in Brisbane team but overall they put on a great show for the Americans. Wonder who’s up next year.

"There were 350 million people living in America, he said, and if the NRL could manage to attract even one per cent of them to watch the NRL on its Watch NRL app, a subscriber service, that would mean 35 million people paying to watch the game."

This is what VLandys said prior to the Vegas trip. His maths is absolutely crap but even if there was a 1% takeup that would equate to 3.5 million viewers. Well apparently the viewing figures are out for how many septics watched the game on Fox. And the answer - 61,000!! I think PVL has gothis work cut out getting that 3.5 million on board.

Be interesting how the Watch NRL App subscriptions & betting market data breakdown looks.

No doubt they wanted more than 61k but in saying that the Rugby world cup final only drew 450k.

Fox Sports has a low subscription base
Part of game 1 moved between channels.
61k is a record coverage for a NRL game over there

If they get 10k of those subscribers to watchnrl at $229 a year thats a good start.

If anyone seriously thought we would get a heap of people watching day 1 they’re dreaming. I doubt they will make it - it will need more than 5yrs to make a dent & cost will blow out.

He is play is a 5yr buildup and isn’t viewers or selling tickets it’s the betting market share.

I doubt it will be successful but credit for having a crack, if it sees positive cashflow the game will be better off for it.

Much like the NRL buying up Hotels etc.

At least he is doing something to progress the sustainable of the game.

He comes across as a bit of a know it all….that comment he made that “just because the Broncos are adamant didn’t make it right” was unwarranted. I get he is defending his player, but don’t come across as a “know it all”…in his entire coaching career he has had a roster that is worth millions more than the opposition…he has always had that leg up in every game he has coached….to me that doesn't translate to him being a great coach…I’d like to see how he’d go with the Titans, Newcastle or the Tigers….
I have wondered the same thing. He walked into a team with a great roster and they performed under him.

The only season of adversity was 2016, with the Mitchell Pearce dog video. Pearce was the captain and was rubbed out for the season. They also had some injuries, but then that is not unusual.

His basic squad for 2016, minus Pearce was:
Mitch Aubusson
Shaun Kenny-Dowall
Jake Friend
Aidan Guerra
Hared Waerea-Hargreaves
Boyd Cordner
Daniel Tupou
Michael Jennings
Sam Moa
Isaac Liu
Dylan Napa
Samisoni Langi
Kane Evans
Brendan Elliot
Jackson Hastings
Blake Ferguson
Matt McIlwrick

In addition he debuted some talented youngsters during the season, such as:
Joseph Manu
Latrell Mitchell
Ryan Matterson
Jayden Nikorima

That looks to me like a pretty decent pool of talent to call upon. In fact, it looks like a better squad than the WT squad for 2024.

Yet in 2016 Easts came 15th, ie, second last.

I thought they under performed that year.

Is that a reflection of his coaching ability? I don't know.

The 350m figure to me seems stupid. I think a better judge is maybe MLS? At best what we can ever hope for is getting 10% of MLS in maybe 10 years. That's probably the potential. Maybe see what the viewership of MLS was with their first game of EPL there and see what % of that the NRL got..
