Charlie Staines #262

Staines has had a couple of big errors in the last 2 games. All hard takes but should be par for an NRL standard winger in current year. The drop before a 99% chance of scoring last night is unforgivable. Not running onto the ball and being too deep is also unforgiveable which he has done numerous times. Dude needs to realise the easy ride that was last year is over and he needs to be ready for ball with halves and centres now that can actually play the game to a decent level. No more bludging on the wing for a pay cheque.

One thing I think people are missing is that opposition teams don't kick to him - they kick to Tupou and that should tell you they know Charlie is both safe under the ball, less likely to be able to force a msitake and more dangerous with it. Sometimes it's what the opposition does or doesent do that tells you more about a winger.

100%. Should be dropped for not keeping up with the play

In what world is Staines more dangerous then Tupou. Tupou is a much stronger ball runner.

The depth isn’t there behind him to be dropped… but why not chuck Latu in on the wing when fully fit? His time with Samoa proved he can play anywhere.

He’s fine . He’s coming back from an injury and is learning to trust his speed again . Last years Staines scores both those number tries these last couple of weeks . He’s still developing trust in his body .
He’s letting no one down , and at times I noticed he was almost providing a second fullback option last night . Roaming around the middle looking for second phase .

I was disappointed in how he performed a couple of times last night, but he is an affront player that also is a confidence playr, that see,s to be really popular amongst his teammates..we fans need to show some loyalty to the players the same as we expect the players to be loyal to the team..if they think they will be dropped due to one mistake that will affect their confidence.. we need to support them a ltitle guy and show them we believe in them a little bit … it’s a 2 way street in my opinion.

Whilst he needs to improve, I noticed a shift in our defence last evening when the sharks went down his edge the centre and winger actually stayed on their man and trusted each other. I believe if we still had Noffa he would have come in and let the Sharks make a break down that edge.

Let’s hope they continue to improve combinations over the next few weeks.

I went to Canberra last week and Lobb and Alaimalo are not better than Staines along with being slower than what we need. Staines needs to be more involved which he can do.

I was impressed with our defence and it shows we are capable we just need to be consistent.

NRL 360 will need another team this week.

Showed good versatility for Tonga. However Great potential in the halves, and only as hooker or centre if as bench option. Not as winger.

all that tells me is that Tupou has got hands like feet and is always a chance of putting down any kick ...

Once the ball is in his hands .. Tupou is a bit more of a threat running it back than Charlie

Tupou isnt setting the world on fire atm but agree he seems more of a threat than CS. Dont like how he carries the ball.

One thing the stats don't show is my breathing stopping every time I'm waiting for Tupou to catch a bomb.

He uses the alligator catching technique that all fk wits who can’t catch use.
It’s a simple flaw to fix, I’ve taught unco people to catch properly in cricket, should take one off season. 🤷‍♂️

Interesting stats BT. Wonder how they stack up against other wingers in the comp.

Excuse me but what a load of nonsense! Before his injury last year he was playing with a lot of enthusiasm and impact in the fullback and wing positions. His injury was unfortunate and a serious one. Obviously, he's just getting into his stride again. Sure he's made one or two mistakes but he's also been starved of opportunities. He's one of the genuinely quick guys we have and we need to persevere with him. Besides, we have no one else at the moment.
yea and that pretty much sums him up- we have no one else, thats why he's in the team. not because he plays well or offers anything.

I agree in relation to techinque; however, I'm not sure he will be good under the high ball until he gets some confidence. I expect that all the outside backs have had individual coaching on their in the air/on the ground catching techniques and that is practiced during the week at training. Unfortunately taking the high ball is not just technique. Taking the high ball is about confidence and commitment; technique is just about how to create the bucket and secure the ball.

Confidence is the foundation of the skill set and until he has the confidence he won't fully commit. Toupou is definitely one of those confidence type players. If we get on a roll and string a few wins together he may progress - but until he really commits to the ball he will always be a liability.
