LIVE GAME Round 15 vs. Titans

Live Game Discussion
I don't get how Bellamy gets the team to play for him. He is a miserable prick even when they're winning
I remember he won that grand final and kicked a chair in disgust.

The crap he’s brought to the game over the years, none of it has been interesting or constructive.

Finding new ways to cheat and injure players has a use by date.

He’s an embarrassment to the game.

I’d rather have ten years of Benji spooning than a day in Bellamy’s man child dystopia.

Even Harry has turned into a ( word removed) under his schoolyard bullying.

If Harry was at school, we’d give him the royal flush for turning into a snitch and teachers pet.

When he was with us, he was cool.

90% of the players who leave us, their personalities deteriorate afterwards and many turn into horrible people.

Does anyone concur with this statement???

The only recent player who remained kind of cool when he left was Garner.

He’s still kindly and praises us. Legend.

I do.

Look at the Mattersons, Allos, Tommy’s, BJ, Lucy, Momo etc.

They often go feral as human beings.

Actually, Mbye stayed cool and played factory at SGI too. He is Ok.

Stef should stay with us for the good of his mental health.

Tommy never went feral.. got Newtown in a grand final...
I was referring to Talau!

Yeah, but for the other or real and authentic Brooksy nightmare Tommy;

a) He never played for WT

and

g) I allowed a 10% window of “on-going post- WT tenure good bloke-ism” so I could slip out the difficulty imposed by absolutes.

You know, people who argue that Richo is all good when he is not.

Or that Lee is all bad when ….mmm….then again, you might just have a point AHX.

I might have to re-calibrate my position!

Despite the win - Nine Line Breaks is not good enough.

I just rewatched the game with a focus on our defensive lapses. Particularly the performance of our left edge. For those that had Sezer or Matumua in contention for points in your man of the match selections - you may want to reconsider!

In the first instance Sezer rushed up on Foran and didn't shut the play down, with Kini sweeping around the back we were on a hiding to nothing from that moment. That break is completely on the shoulders of Sezer.

On the second raid down that side Olam turned in on Sami despite Sezer turning out so they both commited to the same player creating the overlap. Kini sweeping around committed Faatape, who made the right decision, leaving the sideline open again. Chalk that on up to Olam's poor decision. He should have trusted Sezer to complete the tackle and have the cover clean up if requred.

When they scored not long afterwards Sezer half commited to Foran, despite Sam F pushing up on his inside. Samuela made the tackle on Foran, Olam then had to take his man Sami, commiting Faatape to the Kini sweep leaving an open path for Fafiti to score. So again chalk the poor decision up to Sezer.

Foran's break that led to the try was shocking defence in the middle. Matamua failed to provide any pressure on the inside and Pole missed the tackle. Matamua's lack of effort was the catalyst - Pole missing the tackle was simply the result of the lack of effort on the inside..

The line break just prior to half time was a result of a 1 on 1 miss by Sezar on Kini; stood up cold. The try saver by Olam with seven seconds on the clock was a great recovery though. Chalk another one up to Sezer.

Just after half time Faataape stopped a certain try by intercepting the penultimate pass. This was the same right side play from Foran with Kini sweeping around behind a forward running under. This time there was no inside pressure. Jordan Miller gave up on the play as soon as the ball was passed and started walking and Bula was slow to react in cover. The play resulted in a three on two but inside pressure, adequate cover and the sideline should have nullified it. This showed a definite lack of effort on the play across the board.

The break by Kelly off his own line six minutes after half time was really poor. Api and the two Fainus (I think) missed him cold. No shoulders in the tackle at all. Simply poor (I expect this was one of the ten tackles Api missed).

The tunnel ball play by the Titans 12 before the siren when Fafita dropped the pill with the line wide open was poor effort by many players on many levels. No effort from any of our right side players to get across to the ball; Matamua in particular should have shut the play down as soon as the ball was picked up. Everyone walking hoping someone else will shut the play down. Bula then made next to no effort to get across to the wing - just jogging along. It looked like the whole team clocked off for ten seconds there.

With a minute to go Sezer again rushes out of the line on Foran and fails the shut the ball down. This commits Olam and Faataape allowing Fafita another clear run to the line. Fortunatley for us it was disallowed due to an obstruction but again a poor play on the left edge.

So at the end of the day there were no issues at all with the right edge - in fact the coordination between Api/Mason, Naden and Staines was excellent all game. Api as a half has deficiencies in defence. He missed the most tackels of all players on the paddock. If he was to keep playing there I'm sure he would correct the timing issue and cut the misses down; however, those wanting him to play there again this week may want to reconsider.

So the issues that really need to be addressed are:
  1. Left edge coordination and effort. Several poor calls or reads between Sezer and Olam and a lack of inside pressure at times. In particular the individual decision making process of Sezer trying to shut down the play early needs to be addressed. It directly led to three of the nine line breaks. I think it is a risk worth taking on their twenty but on ours it is simply dumb.
  2. Matamua needs a toe up the bum - he clocks off in defence at time - not all the time but you can't hide in defence playing at this level.
  3. Bula also needs a toe up the bum - he is a spectator at times in defence on our line. When they use the sweep play he needs to be great mates with the sideline and cut those plays off. His effort with Mason on the left edge was great - so he can do it. He needs to do it every time.
  4. Miller is a big risk at this level in Defence. He played OK in defence but was walking way too much at critical stages. He needs a big preseason to drop some of that puppy fat and get some more playing minutes into his legs.
PS - in other news: an absolutely shocking miss by Luai leading up the Newcastle's first try.

Excellent breakdown.
If we worked on defence all off season, our defensive coach needs a new career.

I have to agree with all of that.
Api's a great leader and deserves all the love he gets on here but the last few weeks his defence has been bad. I put it it down to trying too hard be inspirational. He's throwing his body at tackles and dropping off regularly, he just needs to dial it back a notch.
I currently don't see what others rave about in Miller. People get too carried away by the scales.
He's huge sure, but he's fat and lazy to go with it. He needs 12 months working on fitness to ever be a viable option.

I certainly agree Miller needs to work on his fitness but he is very young and much of his weight will become muscle as he matures and he gets targeted training in the right areas to increase his fitness

Great analysis & I'm sure Johnny Morris goes through similar with players in question.

A big week for Sezer & Matamua to work on their defensive deficiencies.

Hopefully this exposure to the NRL for big Jordan will do him wonders to show him what he needs to work on & really lift in.

We finally had some luck go our way on Saturday with the opposition playing worse than what we did & some effort plays saved us.

I certainly agree Miller needs to work on his fitness but he is very young and much of his weight will become muscle as he matures and he gets targeted training in the right areas to increase his fitness

That is very true but it is only our injury/unavailable player lists that would be giving him a run at the moment. His time should come in the next 2 years when he is more capable of longer minutes
