Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

They make much better decisions than us… The Tigers pay aging players Klemmer and Bateman $1.5m a year between them … probably more than what they pay Crighton and JWH…

it’s no point crying about them being smarter … this difference in the two sides we saw last night is a result of years of incompetence from the Tigers .., and it will take years to correct it ..
Exactly
The last oldie the roosters brought was a half named Cronk, a great purchase compare that to our oldies, Klem, Bateman and Olam
I’m hoping our best purchase lately is Richo and in a couple of years we are more like the chooks.
It’s not going to happen overnight

The Bulldogs over the last few seasons have offloaded plenty while still under contract, they are not paying the full salary cap wages for all those players I can assure you.
They really haven't offloaded many contracted players though. RFM to Dragons, Pangai and some shenanigans with Biondi-Odo about the only 3 I can think of, plus Lewis being fired. Pretty sure all others just weren't offered a renewal.
Edit: forgot Jackson retired with a year left on his contract. Still only the 2 significant ones as they are reportedly paying freight on RFM.

Assuming we lose Utoikamanu...

Our Middle stocks for next year are:
Klemmer (Toiler at this point, but consistent & good defender)
Twal (better leg speed than Klemmer but also a toiler with good defence)
Pole (Great footwork at the line. His 'power running' is overrated, but his footwork puts him in half gaps that can be exploited)
Sione Fainu (For mine, similar to Pole & could form an interesting front row combination- footwork & the ability to offload)
Seyfarth (Somewhere between a prop & second rower. Probably the hardest worker & could end up being the best all around type)
Miller (very young & will need time to fully develop)

Matamua (interesting type- ball playing before the line but offers little in running metres. Threw a nice pass for Pole's try)

What we do not have in that group is a regular "power forward" type. And for the money that would need to be spent, getting a Royce Hunt type player isn't great value.

I've offered a few names- Hola, Knight etc.

But the more I think about it- Corey Horsburgh from the Raiders has been punted to KOE & is a far superior player to that. What he adds is aggression. And if we can't can't meet teams with power, I feel fighting them with honest aggression is the go.

A pack that features Horsburgh, Klemmer, Bateman, Seyfarth & Sam Fainu....I think it puts the hurt on a bunch of teams. You then blend in the silkier players like Pole & Sione Fainu & Matamua...

I think Horsburgh is an attainable target. I'd love to have him in our club.
Adding someone like Horsburgh to a pack that already features Sam Fainu, Klemmer, Bateman and Seyfarth is a recipe for disaster

He was injured most of the season & just came back from injury on the weekend….. That’s why he hasn’t been seen in the NRL team sheet this season. In his 1st game back in 40mins made 110mtrs + and decked someone.

He hands down would be a walk up starter for us, be more effective on the right side than Bateman as well.
I think the issue with Horsburgh is he’s known whinge and whine about anything and everything and is not well liked by his team mates because of it.
If you could somehow get him to simply focus and play the game to the best of his ability he is well above average NRL forward.

I 100% disagree, but that's just me.

If we can't beat teams through size, we need to stay in the fight as long as possible. Losing Utoikamanu SHOULD force the club to reassess the forward pack. I personally would think a pack hell bent on not giving a step, wouldn't be a bad thing.

I wouldn’t target him but under the right contract terms if he hit the market we could do alot worse.

It’s not lazy at all . The year they bought Tedesco , they also added Cronk. The issue isn’t that they can offer overs and want to spend the money , I personally don’t care .
The issue is the lack of transparency, and regulations around it . Like every other sport with a salary cap . The “well if they do , so should we” is a lazy argument . The opportunities might not be available .
And in a completion regulated by a salary cap , being able to offer more money external of that cap is ridiculous . It undermines the whole thing .
It should be transparent , and obvious , and allowed with regulations like a luxury tax.
It allows clubs like the roosters to spend whatever they want , but also provides enough penalties to allow something akin to parity . And if the roosters screw up and chuck good money at bad … well then you have the NY Yankees of the last 20 years . Paying the tax , and having a mediocre team on the paddock .
For the billionth time , it’s not about the fact they can pay overs , it’s about all the bullshit that goes with that , and the undermining of the game .
As I’ve said previously even FIFA understand this , with “fair play” rules in place . Despite those rules being toothless at the moment . ( I think man city have like 200 fines )

I agree more transparency would be ideal. Not arguing that point. FIFA is a really poor example, they are so corrupt it isn't funny. Their policing of FFP is a joke.

I'm saying it's too simple to say they are "buying" premierships. They develop juniors and established players just about as well as anyone. Players go there and improve, which has to be attractive for any prospective player. To borrow one of your favourite phrases on here, there's no point "wrist slitting" over it.

What do you want them to do? only choose from a junior pool between randwick and bondi?

I haven't watched him play in a couple of years. Really surprises me he is playing reserve grade. The Horsburgh of a couple of years ago I would take in a heart beat on a low average prop contract.

So the Dogs rebuild continued unabated, while we just sit on our hands and knees...and remain in last place

Sitili Tupouniua to go to the Dogs next year....

Why oh why aren't we in the race for him?...we supposedly have the cap space, he is far better than any forward we currently have, including Stefano...

Would really surprise me if Tigers didn't have a crack. Seem to be good at keeping things in house at the moment

We can't go for anyone until we clear cap space, from what I know we are close to over it now, hence why Richo was overseas trying to offload some of the roster. Unfortunately for us players have so far dug their heels in and are opting to stay,,, Naden and Sullivan are two that he had homes for but their manager who is Mario Tartak is hanging in trying to force our hand in having us chip in which would contribute towards our salary cap. I used to think Isaac Moses was the issue at the tigers but Tartak has a lot of say because of the numbers he has embedded in the club, last count he had 10 or 11 players of our Top 30 roster which is huge.
