Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

The leadership did/does not have the follow through experience. The players showed up
While it’s true Benji is inexperienced as a coach and clearly in a dilemma over what to do to motivate his players that have clearly become uninterested in putting in maximum effort for the Wests Tigers jersey, it is true what Andrew Johns stated on the Sunday Footy Shiw this morning, it’s not up to Benji to apologise to the fans, the players should be ashamed of their effort on Friday night and simply have to take a bit of pride in their performance and have a go.
I’m my opinion there is probably half a team that can be exempt from this criticism.
Two players I would like to highlight are Samuela Fainu. I watched him try his backside off, running the ball hard, tackling hard and generally leading our effort areas. As the game wore on I can only imagine how disheartening it was for him to see many team mates not showing any effort of care and I strongly believe this was a key factor on him eventually missing g a couple of crucial tackles that led to tries conceded, I definitely do not believe it was any lack of effort on his behalf.
The other player that often cops unwarranted criticism is Charlie Staines. Sure he was ineffective, but tell me what player could have done much better in his position. Like always he was never provided any quality ball, he was always the first to put his hand up and take the tough carries out of our danger zone, none of his carries were half hearted and why wasn’t someone else in our back 5 sharing the load ? That aside he didn’t miss a tackle and similar to Bula was given no opportunity to shine in attack.

Thats another thing. We have lone wolfs at best. Why cant we capitalise on their back of their enthusiasm. Why are we disjointed...

It is very disappointing especially when some of our players that are clearly trying their best each and every week are an 18 year old on Galvin, a 20 year old in Sam Fainu, two 21 year olds in Pole and Bula, the smallest player in our team in Ap and a lowly paid player in Seyfarth.
For the record I firmly believe Sezer is certainly trying, he just gets confused and doesn’t play all that well as the teams main playmaker on a consistent basis. In saying that we cannot criticise his effort and defensive intent.
As noted above I also believe Staines is trying, he maybe largely ineffective in this team environment, but again it’s not from lack of effort.

You have a good heart... sharing is caring.
Lol.

Safety in numbers too.

I’ve got most of next years membership covered by a sly bet I laid in April-see below. They have shortened to $3.50 now.

If the dragons can actually jag it, @Tucker might start taking me a bit more seriously.

He’s called the last two spoons for us in pre-season too, but I’m too much of a pussycat and it’s $1.01.

Gamble responsibly folks, stay off the machines etc, it’s all a joke and rigged, I can assure you.

It’s an amazing turnaround from the Dragons, I hope they can see it out and play finals. Enjoy your $60….half a tank of fuel lol…

I don't think there is a lack of effort, that Benji has lost the team or even that we are playing any worse than the last few seasons.

If anything- the efforts from the players, despite the bad results, should be the focus.

Bula chasing down the Sharks winger after the intercept. Pole running down Trindall despite the scoreline.

There is still a significant balance issue in the squad when it comes to output from key positions. There is also a significant lack of experience across the squad.

We cannot generate momentum. We cannot get across the tryline or maintain pressure the way most sides do. More concerningly- we cannot win physical contests in defence & put the opposition on the floor. And lastly, we do not promote the football.

Some of those things are being taught. Some of those things are addressed by Luai & Turuva. Some of those things will become less of an issue as guys like Latu Fainu, Makasini, Fa'agutu, Miller etc become part of the matchday squad.

Mostly- we have depth issues. If we are injured- the quality of player brought in is not (currently) up to a standard that negates any drop off. Additionally, we don't have the quality in the depth to push & replace some players who are holding 1st grade spots & not exceeding. And while our half & five-eight are upgraded from last year, I would bet there are only a very small amount of teams that would play Sezar or Galvin in their top squad this year.

Most scoff at being called a development club, but our squad is simply that- developing. So many juniors filling roster spots- we are going to encounter issues until they either get filtered out or force their way into 1st grade (note- force their way, not play) I'm still firmly believing we are going the right way.

It's not skill we need to add. It's players that stop us being bullied. It's ok to lose & learn. Having players cut through the middle simply because we cannot physically match up, is disheartening & doesn't give any skill players the chance to grow.

I think the team misses Alex Twal on the field. Sione Fainu, Sam Fainu & Pole offer pretty much all the 'skill' players needed to make our forwards effective. It's losing the one-on-one battles between Utoikamanu, Klemmer, Seyfarth etc in the middle that allow the opposition to build momentum. We lack guys that stop the opposition doing what they want.

The Warriors were flogged by the Titans a couple of weeks back with a much stronger roster than ours even with injuries. The style and rules of the game will result in some teams being flogged - especially the lower teams. We need to keep some perspective about where this team is placed in its current state. It cant carry the weight for all the previous stuff ups. We all know the limitations -;we identify them every week. The competition is not evenly matched and when you look at clubs like the Broncos loosing 6 on the trot with all their resources - scrutiny about poor performance should be fairly and squarely directed towards them.
